Saddam Captured in Tikrit, Disguised and Dusty

TIKRIT, Iraq (Dec. 14) - U.S. troops captured Saddam Hussein near his home town of Tikrit in a major coup for Washington's beleaguered occupation force in Iraq.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him," the U.S. administrator in Iraq Paul Bremer said on Sunday in his first, pithy comments to a Baghdad news conference. Cheers greeted the announcement.

"The tyrant is a prisoner," he said, adding the capture was made in a town near Tikrit on Saturday.

"There were no injuries. Not a single shot was fired," Lieutenant-General Ricardo Sanchez, the top U.S. general in Iraq, told the news conference in the Iraqi capital.

He then showed a videotape of a bearded Saddam in detention and undergoing medical checks.

Soldiers tore off a false beard and took samples from the ousted dictator for DNA identity tests after digging down into a cellar during an overnight raid on a house following a tip-off, members of Iraq's U.S.-backed Governing Council said on Sunday.

After seven months of increasingly bloody attacks on U.S. forces and their allies following Saddam's ousting on April 9, the arrest is a major boon for U.S. President George W. Bush. His campaign for re-election next year has been overshadowed by mounting casualties and wrangling with key allies over Iraq.

It may break the spirit of some of his diehard supporters and ease anxieties of many Iraqis who lived in fear for three decades under a man who led them into three disastrous wars.

U.S. officials will also hope to extract key intelligence on the alleged weapons programs which formed the public grounds for Bush to go to war in defiance of many U.N. allies. Little evidence of banned weapons has been found.

Saddam, 66, had kept up a stream of belligerent rhetoric from hiding, even after his sons Uday and Qusay were killed by U.S. troops in July.

Already vexed by its failure to find al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, Washington blamed Saddam for promoting some of the violence against its forces.

But analysts warned that other groups could go on fighting.

"This has lifted a shadow from the people of Iraq. Saddam will not be returning," British Prime Minister Tony Blair said in a statement.

Saddam's sons Uday and Qusay were identified after comparisons with DNA samples. The sons went down, guns blazing, against overwhelming force, including missiles and aircraft.

Their father was taken alive.

Washington has made Saddam number one -- the "ace of spades" -- on its list of 55 most-wanted Iraqis, and placed a $25 million reward on his head.

An informer was paid $30 million and given refuge in the United States for turning in Uday and Qusay in Mosul.

Saddam would be put on trial, Iraqi National Congress leader Ahmad Chalabi told Reuters. A tribunal system for Iraqis to try Saddam and fellow Baathist leaders was set up only last week.

"This is good for Iraq. He will be put on trial. Let him face justice," Chalabi, who returned after the invasion from years in U.S. exile, said in Baghdad.

The word came just hours after the latest major attack on Washington's Iraqi allies, with a suspected suicide car bomber killing at least 17 people and wounding 33 at an Iraqi police station in the restive town of Khalidiyah, west of Baghdad.

GUNFIRE

In early afternoon, gunfire broke out across the capital as news filtered through that Saddam was in U.S. custody.

U.S. officials had said Saddam had eluded American troops by moving every few hours, probably in disguise and aided by members of his clan in the Sunni Muslim areas around Tikrit, north of Baghdad.

The capture of Saddam is a morale boost for U.S. troops in Iraq, who have been under daily attack from shadowy guerrillas, some of whom they believe may have been directed by the former president from hiding.

U.S. forces, backed by Britain and Australia, toppled Saddam in April.

"His arrest will put an end to military and terrorist attacks and the Iraqi nation will achieve stability," said Amar al-Hakin, a senior member of the Shi'ite political party the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq.

"We want Saddam to get what he deserves. I believe he will be sentenced to hundreds of death sentences at a fair trial because he's responsible for all the massacres and crimes in Iraq."

But Mustafa Alani, an analyst at the Royal United Services Institute in London, warned that there were other anti-American groups in Iraq ready to continue attacks.

"There will be a reduction in operations sponsored by former regime loyalists, but this is not the full story because they are not the only group involved," he said.

"For the Americans after the failure to capture Osama bin Laden after so many years, it is a propaganda coup...It's an intelligence prize because they can get information from him about cells working now. And it's a huge victory."

This is fantastic news imo....
They showed a picture of him on the news and he looked all scruffy and bearded like he'd been isolated for quite some time...
He is truly the coward of the century, purely evil if you ask me....
Personally I can't deny that I am very glad he's been caught....

Mama-San, I am glad to see you!
Thank-You for this news,
it is a wonderful revelation!
I hope you are well and happy...

Peace and Love....:)

I don't believe it...yet....
Come on, someone so well trained by the CIA wouldn't allow himself to be captured alive, must be one of his doubles.
And DNA tests can be faked.

SF- Learned not to trust anything any government tells him...has a moron thing he likes to do, forming his own opinions instead of just rolling over like you lot and taking what htey hear as the truth right away.

It's a good thing that Saddam Hussein has been captured; interesting, though, that it took an informant to cough up the goods. That is, perhaps, why they have not been able to catch bin Laden - no one has enough self-interest to betray him.

The trick now, though, is not to make Hussein a martyr and a rallying point for a "cause", which could backfire on the US and the rest of the world, which is what the tape of his capture may very likely achieve.

I have to tell you, though, I was not impressed by the decision to show that tape. The last thing you want is for people to see him as someone to feel sorry for, and yet, that's exactly what I felt - and I didn't want to. It put the US in a very bad light, from a PR point of view. I don't doubt he was milking the situation for all it was worth - but that's exactly why they shouldn't have shown the tape. It was not only distasteful, it smacked of hubris. It may end up redounding on the US negatively.

You felt sorry for Saddam? How could anyone feel sorry for this mass murderer and butcher..I dont think there is nothing in this world that could make me sorry for this individual(and i use that term lightly).
It would have been better if they had dropped a hand grenade down in that hole and dragged his ass out and hung him from the nearest tree..Or better yet, just release him among the Iraqui's and let them rip him apart..
The only dictator you can compare him to is Hitler.
Like Bush said--"Good Riddance to Mr. Saddam! The world is a better place without him..
God bless Bush and God bless America for making the world a safer place..Osama and the freak from North Korea next..

I think you missed something in the reading, Mike - I said, "I felt sorry for him - and I didn't want to. The trouble is, regardless of whatever you hear on the news about his attitude since capture, his lack of cooperation, what stays with you is the image; and as we all well know, images make powerful icons. The image we've seen is that of a sorry-looking, sad-faced man who was living in a hole, who was forced to submit to a very public physical examination for the whole world to see.

The propaganda attached to that tape might be "look how the mighty have fallen"; but the fact is, to show a tape that publicly humiliates your enemy like that is just asking to make him a martyr and a focus for more disaffection in the Middle East. They would have been better off to have announced his capture and shown him in custody being led away. What they did show will only serve to infuriate the rest of the bees in the hive, and that we do not need.

There are bigger issues at stake than just the capture of Saddam Hussein. I disagree that the world is now a "safer place" with the capture of Hussein. That tape, that capture, the way it was handled, the obvious malicious glee of the US officials - all that will serve is more terrorism, more war, more destablisation of the Middle East, more animosity towards the US. The capture of Hussein is only a very small part of a very large picture, and to focus in on only that as the ultimate triumph is, in my opinion, short-sighted and dangerous.

I think capturing Saddam was bigger than capturing Osama..Osama would be replaced in a minute if the US took him out but Saddam and his regime are gone forever.
I could never feel any sorrow for someone like Saddam..They treated him too good and had to show him to let the world and the Arab world in particular along with all those fighting for him, to know that he was no longer in commission..He is and was a pathetic human being(if you can call that piece of crap that) and he should have been done the same way that Mussolini was done..
I cannot imagine anything in this world that you could do to this piece of garbage that would make me feel anything for him..He is unlike anyone that has come along in our lifetime and there is a lot more that will be found out now that he is in custody and being treated too humanely..
It makes me sick to hear anyone say that the US embarrassed Saddam..The man that is responsible for mass graves of 500,000 to over a over a million and the slaughter of his own people and millions of muslims..
There is nothing on this earth that is bad enough for him..
Thats my opinion and i could be wrong but in this case I'M NOT.

Storm

Smile dammit!
Actually TD makes some good points but there was no way he wasn't going to have his nose rubbed in. Even the back alley assassins picking off soldiers will know he isn't coming back. He doesn't deserve a show trial. Let him rot.

I'm very happy we caught him. In hindsight, however, we should've just airlifted Seagal into Iraq and he would have done the job much more quickly.

Is that French Canadian(just kiddin-dont take it personal)...Actually adding gasoline and a match to Saddam would be quite a good idea(nice thought there Fox)..You ai'nt always asleep are you?
Bottom line..No one should feel sorry for Saddam..If you feel sorry for Saddam in any way it says a lot about you as a person..He is being treated very well and its too bad this thing cant move a little faster and this piece of garbage be executed..He's not gonna give up anything more than he wants to and the US will not gouge out his eyes or cut off pieces of him the way his men did to get information..Good riddance to one of historys greatest monsters..
A lot of people thought Churchill was crazy too in thinking that Hitler was a real threat..(amazing)..
Its not revenge either--Its justice...

lol yea okay if I feel sorry for someone it says alot about me *rolls eyes*

He shouldn't get the easy way out of this life, he needs to suffer.
You call letting the bastard get out of suffering in a grey prison cells spooning with someone named bubba?
Besides, once you kill him, he's a martyr!
Let him be stuck in the cell, with nothing to do, just 4 walls. poor his food in through a hole so he can't kill himself.
Eye for an Eye is bullshit.
It shows alot about you if you want him to get the easy way out.
