Steven Seagal's Double/Stunts

Holy ****, that dude has the exact same manerisms as Seagal. OK, grant it, those are pictures, and anyone can pose for pictures, but look at the dude's posture and where his hands are placed, how his chin is raised, etc. This guy is good at his job. He's like a mime, only not. Anywho, where in god's name did this astrology talk come from? And what's this about aries and inhancing anatomy?

what would he need a stunt double in the mountain dew commercial for, ther wasnt any stunts...

I missed this the first time I looked at the list, as well - he was a "photo" double in the Mountain Dew commercial. Which means, I suspect, when they were setting up the shots to film Steven in the commercial, it was this guy they were using. Then when it came time to shoot the commercial, Steven is called in, he rehearses once or twice, runs through the commercial, and the commercial is done without a lot of time wasted.

Less expensive to use a stand-in for setting up the shots than using the big expensive guy.

Mind you, I *think* that's what happened. As usual, I'm probably half-right, or mostly wrong.

Who was the stunt double for Under Seige 2? The scenes where Mr. Seagal was holding on to the side of the train, and a fight scene dangling from a ciff by a rope the person there had darker wavy hair. Mr. Seagals was straight and brown.

ah, ok....Thanks suzi...OMG, I just love Steven in that headscarf, he makes me weak in the knees...And he has a much nicer and so much more masculine chin then this stunt guy...And his eyes, they just tell me such wonderful stories...And who says Steven is fat? His face is noticably thinner than the doubles, and his ears are so much nicer, IMO...But those two are quite complimentary...I wonder if they got along? I'm sure they did...:)

Seagal has had many stunt double all along... and they can be very easily spoted too... the most obvious would be the scene from "above the law" when he smashes through the glass of some convienience store...

Yes, but... not stunt doubles to do his fighting. Those he did himself - or used to. Stunt doubles for things like falling out of windows or being knocked into the back of a bar (Marked for Death) or a scene with squibbs going off (Hard to Kill) or walking on top of a moving train (Under Seige 2) - that's where the stunt doubles step in, because there's a good chance the star will get hurt. But when the fighting for which he is known is taken over by stunt doubles - well, that's a cheat and a disappointment, and a disappointment, because it's Steven we pay money for to see him do what he does best.

I think he has his reasons, and we don't know them, so just hush about the cheating...
Steven wouldn't do that to us...
I don't think he would, anyway...
I think he's a very honorable man...:)

Oh, I think it's more than just that, Mama san. He did most of his own stunts in OFAK (all wasted, as far as I'm concerned, because of the general awfulness of the film), while in BOTB, he did less than 20%, and even then, he did them mostly sitting down. I think in the case of BOTB it was because he was filming during the hottest season in Thailand, and if he had done his own fighting, more than likely he would have dropped dead from the exertion, because clearly he was not in very good condition, physically. (You'll notice he spent most of the movie sitting down and not moving at all - kind of an odd thing for an "action" hero to do, I thought.)

The problem is, most people when they watch a Steven Seagal film, they want to see him do what he does best - his fighting. When stunt men take over, who wants to see a stunt man doing what Steven is known for? That's what's so disappointing.

Me, I love watching him fight. To me, he's simply poetry in motion. The words "elegant" and "punching the guy's lights out" are incongruous together, and yet, his method of dispatching the bad guys has a fluidity of movement and yes, elegance, that is all his own style and is what makes him such a joy to watch, compared to other 'action' movie stars.

That's why I feel cheated when I see him in a movie where he does almost none of his own fighting. He's not giving us 100%. If the rest of the film made up for it, I wouldn't mind so much. But BOTB, while better than OFAK, was still not up to his usual standard, fight scenes notwithstanding. So it was twice a let-down.

Belly of the Beast

I don't think Belly of the Beast was a let-down at all, I think it was a great film. It's worth 50 The Foreigners and 100 Out For a Kills. Too many people are making too much of the stunt double issue, there were so many fights it was inevitable doubles would be used. To put it in context he did all of the police station fight, all of the transvestite fight, around half of the fruit market fight, all of the opening fight, all of the club fight, at least three-quarters of the sword fight, at least three quarters of the final fight and almost all of the shoot-outs. I don't think that's too bad, it's not that far off how much he's been doubled for the rest of his films, it's just the martial arts of the older ones were less spectacular in a way and so of course doubles would be used in some scenes. He certainly didn't spend most of the film sitting down, he didn't sit down in Belly any more than he did in his Hard to Kill days. Everyone sits down now and then for God's sake. I'd say some of the doubles in Out For a Kill were far more obvious than in Belly of the Beast, I can't recall seeing the stuntman's face once in Belly but look close at scenes in Out For a Kill such as after Sensei gouges the second guy's eyes at the end - the guy is a very bad stunt double as he moves away from his victim. I loved Belly of the Beast and I certainly don't feel cheated. I'd rather have Belly than a million Matrix's and Kill Bills any day of the week.

Steve, I'd just like to stay that I love your way with words. I find myself agreeing with you on almost all of your posts. I feel the exact same way you do about the stunt double issues, Belly of the Beast, and many, many other posts of yours consistently. I've thought this for a long time, and I just wanted to say now that you have a great way of expressing your thoughts and support of Steven and his movies that I admire, respect--and envy a bit. Thanks! :)

Yes, great post, and I agree...
I adore Belly soooooooooooo much, it was great for me, and I watch it often...
I think he was amazing and very charismatic in the role, and his fighting is still as impressive at it ever was...
I can tell his fighting from the doubles very easily, his is very graceful and easy, and it's natural, not fancy or phoney...
I don't think there is anything wrong with using the doubles if they look enough like him...
After all he's only human...
I can't imagine how hard and how much work it is for Sensei to make a film like that...
The effects are very important, so however they manage them is ok by me...
I thought this movie was well done, and I have no complaints about him at all...
He is wonderful, and to me this film was very satisfying...
I say he can use all the doubles he wants, I just like to think of them as helpers...
Because for me, there is no substitute for him, not ever...

Seagal movies

Thanks guys it's very kind of you to say, it's also nice to have fellow fans out their who feel the same way! It sounds as though you guys love his movies every bit as much as I do and the main thing that gets to me is when people nit-pick little details in his films like the occasional stunt double. His films aren't supposed to be art, they're just first class entertainment so why quibble over little things here and there? I just like to sit back and enjoy and for sheer entertainment value I'd say Belly of the Beast is pretty hard to beat. One of the main things I really liked about it which I don't think anyone has yet mentioned was its lightning-fast pace, it didn't get bogged down in the middle as many action films do, it was very fluent in both its action and entertaining scenes from start to finish and Seagal as the lead just topped it all off nicely.
