Wow, Heather!
I hadn't heard this! Thanks.
I just had to look this one up. It should go in the news section, but I'll put it here for now. God bless her and give her strength--she's gonna need it!
Twins for mum, 57
November 11, 2004
Swaddled in purple and blue blankets as they snuggled with their mother, twins Francesca and Gian St James made their world-media debut today - and slept through the whole frenzy.
As cameras from Japan, Europe and across the United States clicked and whirred inches from their tiny faces, the day-old siblings did not even gurgle, oblivious to the stir they had caused.
Fighting back emotion, their mother, Aleta St James, who turns 57 tomorrow, proudly introduced them at Mount Sinai Medical Centre. She is the sister of Guardian Angels founder and radio host Curtis Sliwa
"This is Francesca, which means 'one who loves freedom,"' said the Manhattan mother, "and this is Gian, 'miracle of God."'
Her voice cracking despite her beaming face, she said, "It doesn't feel real. Just to look at these children, they're so beautiful, it's amazing to me. I've done so many things in my life, but holding these children is the most incredible thing I have ever done."
Francesca and Gian were born by Caesarean section yesterday, making their mother the oldest US woman to give birth to twins. She had endured three years' and $33,000 worth of in-vitro fertilisation treatments before the dual miracle.
The father, an unnamed ex-boyfriend of St James', agreed to donate his sperm but will have no part in the twins' upbringing. She has seen only a brief profile of the woman who donated the eggs.
"A lot of people may think I am selfish or crazy or whatever," said St James, who entered the news conference in a wheelchair dressed in a pink bathrobe. "Well, I'm a little bit crazy," said the motivational speaker. "I've never lived in the box. I just say if you have a dream, if you put your mind to it and don't listen to other people's negativity, you can really do incredible things."
Francesca was born first, with brother Gian only a minute behind, said St James.
"I heard her cry, and I started to cry," she said. "They had their own personalities from the beginning. I know that when I am ready to die, I am leaving a great legacy here on the planet."
St James told reporters that her own grandmother was 53 when she gave birth to her mother, also named Francesca, now 80. "I never thought this was strange at all," she said.
The touching scene was almost enough to leave Curtis Sliwa speechless.
"It's their decision to make, but I'll be trying to talk Gian and Francesca out of putting on the red beret of the Guardian Angels," said the proud uncle. "It's dangerous."
Aleta St. James holds her newborn twins, Gian, right, and Francesca at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
