Who Do You Think Are The Best Martial Artists Today?

Are you guys actually trying to compare martial artist with each other claiming this or that was the BEST martial artist or could beat everyone... some of whom has been dead for a long time... most of whom would never go so low as to say things like "I could beat him or him" ... some of who have never, outside the training for a movie, even trained in any martial art... most of would never dream of fighting a fellow martial artist... etc etc etc...

I Belong To Steven
Dear Aikilove,
I just do not really feel that anyone could take Steven down in a real fight...
I think his skills are very real, but these other people I am really not so sure of,
that's all I am saying...
He just makes you know that he is the man, hehehe...
I know that they do not do those competitive things just to show up others, particularly Steven who has never been one to compete with a fellow artist,
that just isn't his way...
But the others, well, I do think they think that way a bit...
I'm not talking about Bruce Lee, obviously, like I said I really know nothing about him...
All I can say it that Steven is very proper, and humble at all times, and he never strays from his MA path, he is firm in what he has learned as a true artist and teacher...
I adore and admire so much for that...
I think this is the one area of his life that he is sooooo serious about, and the other is buddhism of course, as I think for him, they go hand in hand...
What a man...
So strong and proud in so many ways, yet he's so sweet and demure at the same time...
So incredibly amazing to me...
I can't deny that I am totally in love with him...
Maybe the spirituality is what is missing in these others, they just don't have what he has...
I hope you understand what I mean...

Aiki, you're right of course. It's just fun to speculate on who could take who, After all, Sensei did start out making tough guy action movies, so it's not something that's completely out of the ordinary to wonder what his abilities would be like in a competitive fighting arena. And I remember an old Sensei interview where he talked about how he could show Arnold and Sly a thing or two (he was kind of half joking)...

But of course, in real life, martial artists know to respect each other and do not get involved in such trivial talk.

Disciple you should look into Bob Wall and his publicity stunts in the last 5 or so years, and you will know about a real martial artist with a big mouth (and apparently not too large of a head to hold that mouth in; I just have to give him one thing though ... he did a good job with his daughter and her training).

How about Michael Dudicoff? He seemed to me most impressive in American Ninja.

Well, actually one of my friends and I went to see that one, and we thought it was great...
That was the film that I think sparked most of our interest in martial arts movies.
She was crazy for ninja stuff at the time.
I was never into him as he was a blonde, but that movie was good...
I wouldn't say it was a spectacular movie, but then so few films are.
It wasn't comparable to Above the law, for sure.
It only took one glimpse of Nico on the big screen trailer, and I knew Steven was totally exceptional and special. He had a strong appeal indeed. I turned to my friend and we looked at eachother and said wow, who's THAT? :D
He sure is something, alright.
Exceptional.
Now, then and always...

I don't get a heck the point about this B or any other kind of rating.I just go and see the film and the rest doesn't matter to me.
Getting back to Michael Dudicoff,I've seen some other his films as well but not as impressive as that one.I liked the scene when he put a bucket on his head and pointed his finger at that to provoke his opponent to attack him.
Speaking of Seagal,he wasn't the first martial artist I got to see.The first ones were old Chinese movies like Shaolin Ninja which impressed me a great deal then, then I also used to watch Van Damme movies and I'd say some of his earlier ones were more or less impressive, but since I got to know Steven Seagal,Van Damme no longer exists for me.

Seagal is a great fighter but now he is out of shape physically. Bruce Lee could easily beat Seagal in a fight.

Michael Dudicoff did not impress me at ALL. He is not a great martial artist and does not stand out.

In AMERICAN SAMURAI David Bradley is pretty good who he fought Mark Dascascos as the films villian.

Dudicof's movies are almost so bad they're good. I wouldn't even call them martial arts, more comedies. :D

LOL I agree.

His movies should be bronzed in the hall of shame martial art films!

My definition of art and artist simply don't combine with words such as BEST. Therefore I'm never going to partisipate in this kind of hypotetical discussions. I goes agains everything about what I belive the true meaning of budo.

There are budo practitioners who do not see a problem in competing. Are you then saying that they do not understand the true meaning of their martial art?

This thread was not a question about competing (something always framed with rules) as far as I understand it. It's about who could beat whos arse in a theoretical and highly hypothetical situation. I don't have anything against competitions but I don't belive they display anything but superficially of at what level a practitioner are in his or her art (if he or she even consider what they are doing art!).
I feel bad when discussion is about who could beet who, since the practical outcome of such a hypothetical situation would include someone getting hurt or dying. Anything else and it's just a competition with rules. And when people discuss matter that involve people getting hurt or killed as easy as like it was a matter about who could jump the highest it makes my hair stand on end.
Besides that I hate discussions about hypothetical situations that never will happend either because either one or both involved are dead, or they themselves would never (would have never) discuss(ed) or dream(ed) of doing such things etc etc.

I'm bowing out of this one for good now!
