Why is he always treated bad by critics?

incredible advancements!

It's gotta be quite a serious issue, a disorder of a sort, for you to have lost the feeling in your fingers. Neural problems like that can get very serious, but can also be very treatable with todays technology.

Nowadays, medicine has greatly improved and is made more commercial. They can correct your eye vision with the use of lasers. Back in the day, people only heard of lasers from movies or shows like Star Trek for outerspace invasions and battles. They have procedures to alter or remove sweat glands so that the palms don't sweat. Just recently (days ago), scientists discovered a stem cell that controls hair follicle growth, which is a sign that there could be a CURE for baldness.

It's incredible how advanced the research has gotten.
Just think about this: the Apollo mission that the U.S. claims sent their astronauts on the moon had a computer that had less computing power than the chip inside your $5 calculator (not even a scientific one).

Tora: Quit saying "goddamn", please (it's not here, but in your other posts ;)).

As my parents used to say to the five of us, "Kids, don't make me come in there!"

hey Serena come on (unless you're kidding that is)
I started by saying that this wasn't the place for me to explain such things
then you started asking me all these questions, so I answered them for you and for Lotussan

if you want more info, start another thread I guess then, or PM me and if I find more time to spend here just to wait your final response...

Yudansha: That was in response to Tora whining ;) :D about a moderator: "Mamma mia!Help me!Where the heck are the moderators? You should ban this member,he's poisoning our minds!!!SOS!!!" :D

And actually, I didn't ask you any questions. :D All I said to your very complicated, technical post was: "Out of all that, this much I understood: 'For example if your fingers are very unsensitive and if you touch a hot stove, you will not feel hot but the fingers will keep burning without you recognizing it by touch.' And I'm a nurse! :D:" Thanks for your offer, though, Yudansha. :)

Hmmm. I wonder if they'll take me back at work on crutches. Or one of those motorized wheelchairs. Yeah, that's it. That's the ticket! :D

One question I always wanted an answer too, why is he treated so bad and most of his films written off before they are made? This really annoys me about critics, a new film comes up and if Steven Seagal's in it, then it must by rubbish, yet its a good film. Then a film comes along with someone like tom cruise or reeves and its an awful film but critics and everyone goes, that is one off the best films of all time, which isn't true, even if it is their own opinion. I sometimes picture someone else playing one of Seagal's roles, and I don't think anyone can, even if they could, it would be a 1 in 1 chance that it would be a blockbuster! They say he can't act - RUBBISH! I've seen many films and therefore lots of acting and Steven Seagal is a good actor. In a couple of films its wasn't his best performance, but then again all actors end up doing this every so often. All in all he is a good actor and a star, and totally underated. once I read a review of one of his films that made me laugh, it said "He (Seagal) seems to go around beating up people shorter than himself". What a stupid comment, of course he does, he's 6'4" for God's sake!

Welcome to the site.

To get us back on track, because I am THAT concerned (biting sarcasm), I think Seagal is treated bad by critics because, for one, critics are ****. And perhaps, just perhaps, those particular critics on those particular days were particularly high on LSD. Or satan told them to diss Seagal. Or maybe, just maybe, critics tend to bitch about pretty much every single action movie ever made because, let's face it, critics are limp wristed little pansies.

Hey mr critic Seagal is one of the best actors !!!

Don't listen to critics. What they are saying is crap (sorry). They feel comfortable judging people's acting. I have an advise for all of you, go and act yourself. Then we will se how good you are and how much all your words meant. Seagal is the only actor who is able to make ambitious action films. Unlike Arnold Schawrzennegger (how do you spell that???) who in one movie can kill 100 people in 3 minutes using only one gun. And now compare his movies with Seagal's. Here we can find not only action (great action, outstanding fights etc) but elements of politics, martial arts, ecology, the East philosophy and rules of street (it sounds weird). And don't forget about main attraction - Steven Seagal. Tell me where we can find that kind of mixture, in which movie??? I will tel you guys where, only in Seagal's movies. So all critics - get lost!!! Thank you. Goodnight.

Critics

I genuinely couldn't care less about what critics say, not just about Seagal films but about any film in the history of the world ever. Why should I let someone else, who probably has tastes totally different from mine, have any bearing on whether or not I see a movie? Everyone likes different films and I've totally given up listening to critics as I almost always disagree with what they say. The worst ones are those who try and legitimise their existence as these 'critics' by flowering what they say with inventive poetry-like words as if they need to garner some kind of respect for what they do. Which incidentally is sit in a room all day and verbally rip everyone else's hard work to shreds. I'd rather be a garbage-man than a critic. At least a garbage man is doing a socially-good, useful service.

LOL Schwarzenegger - you spelled it right except that there is no double 'n'

One thing: Seagal was not brought into Hollywood because of his acting abilities - Seagal is not the best actor by far - he is an action hero - that's all! Seagal is not a comedian nor is he dramatic - Seagal is pure action. (People like Matt Damon, Tom Cruise, Robert DeNiro, Gene Hackman, Dustin Hoffman - THOSE are actors ... Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Van Damme, and Seagal are action heroes who were chosen to present action which involves some acting but it's all about ACTION!) I don't know what kind of scale the critics have to make their judgements, but it seems that whenever an action movie comes up, it gets many bad reviews because there isn't much good acting as compared to some drama...

But SS has said over and over that he wants to be remembered for his acting, and that he wants to do more exacting parts!

"remembered for his acting" - Yes, I know he said that...

... and it's unfortunate as he is not an Oscar winner... and with the movies that he's coming out with lately, it seems like he's at square one (somewhere, where he's never been before ... Above The Law was a huge successful debut unlike anything I've seen from anyone else).

Why do critics rag on Seagal?

Because they think it is their job, and for them he is an easy target. When He was one of the last action stars on the scene in the early 80's, and by then, the "critics", (who are nothing more than arrogant intellectual wannabes that think something that is popular or fun is terrible) were upset with the films coming out that year. Remember, '88 had Van Damme's "Bloodsport" and several other action titles. "Above the Law" gave them yet another film to bash.

It didn't help either, that Seagal's reputation in Hollywood was never good. Sharon Stone accused him of being a sleaze bag, Director Andrew Davis complained of his ever growing ego, and allegations of sexual misconduct were abound in almost ALL of his films. Nevertheless, he was still making entertaining movies, and with "Under Siege", he became a full blown superstar.

Then came ODG. The critics, who before called Seagal's movies formulaic and brainless, had a hard time adjusting to an enviromentally and spirtiually conscious movie from the same man who made "Hard to Kill". The film did not only receive critical panning, but was also the turning point for Seagal himself. He gained weight in his later films and people had a hard time believing he was so religious when he went and made some of the most popular violent movies.

While Seagal is now described as peaceful and cordial to his fans, his past will always be there to haunt him. Whether it be the involvement with the Gambino Crime Family, or Jenny McCarthy accusing him of sexual harrasment, Seagal will always be a controversial figure of our time.

"Director Andrew Davis complained of his ever growing ego"

Well, that was not hard to see. Even now, his ego gets in the way sometimes. I think it's just a male thing though - so it's not his fault :D

"ith "Under Siege", he became a full blown superstar" - I think that's mainly to the amazing cast that was alongside Seagal ... People saw that other big names wanted to work with Seagal so there must be something about him that's that great - so came his fame.

The supporting cast obviously factored in making the movie a success, but lets not forget Seagal was still popular himself at that time. According to that SNL episode, "Out for Justice" was #1 at the box office, and "Hard to Kill" and Above the Law did well, too. That is the reason WB gave him so much power and money for ODG. he proved he could handle a big budget picture, but he was out of touch with what the fans wanted to see.

"but he was out of touch with what the fans wanted to see"

I agree, but I'd rather say it was out of touch with what the 'movie going public' wanted to see...
