Aikido or karate?

If I may...
For what it's worth, I think you are all right to some degree.
I would say that the absolute majority of "street fights" (man I hate that concept, but ok) involve people with absolute no training what so ever in MA's. As such it's usually include drunk and/or stoned people with little controll engaging in fights that quickly turns into wrestling fights (hence the 'going to the ground').
I would say that the extreme rare cases where fights or assaults include someone really trained in MA (any MA would do really), who at the same time is not influenced by alcohole or any other substance, usually have enough controll over his/her body that he/she doesn't need to go to the ground unless he/she want's to (e.g. to secure someone in a lock).

What does this mean? Well perhaps littledragons figures are accurate. Does it matter to people who train MA? I don't think so.

FWIW, as I've mentioned before, when I was attacked once it was multiple opponents... and I didn't go to the ground... they however did... and I didn't deliver a single punch.

Yudansha,

I do not want to say which police dept. I work for, only due to the fact that this is an open site, so I would not feel comfortable, however I do work in Washington State, and I work for a smaller sized city. If you want, PM me and I can give you more info.!!!!! And Aikilove, I agree with you as far as we are all right to a degree, however I think Little is confusing reality fighting with actual street fights. And also not taking into account of multiple people being involved against one.

And one note Little, it is not my "OPINION" as far as ground fighting goes. I think we all know what the truth is about grappling. I am not saying that it is not a great art to know, if it has to be used it is great. I am thankful that I used to take Judo, it will help if I ever get taken to the ground. But I think that, as Yudansha has stated, a martial arts teacher who wants students (and happens to teach grappling) will state to you some "facts" or other statistics so that you will choose his/her school.

I have researched alot of different arts when finally choosing what works for me. I never listened to what the instructors told me regarding the "superiority" of the art(s) they taught. I took what I saw from observing several classes and chose my own path. But that is just me!!!!
