Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Yes, and there's "a few bodyguards", and then there's "ten bodyguards".

People tend to exaggerate and become economical with the truth when they talk about Sensei. Possibly because he's such a larger than life personality. Who cares really? All I know is if there were a few more people like him around, the world would be a better place. Bodyguards or no bodyguards.

Unfotunately, there is only one Steven Seagal...
More like him? Hmmmm, what a novel idea...;) :D ;)
I like the way you think Disciple...:)
I don't know about this story though, something seems awfully fishy to me...
Wonder what Craig thinks of it?

The whole story looks dodgy.Craig didn't say who it was so only he knows if the source is even remotely reliable. It was a brave thing to do to testify against the mob.No amount of bodyguards will save you from a sniper's bullet.
The man on screen and off are probably 2 different people altogether.

Isn't a visit with a lawyer supposed to be confidential? I mean should may be discussing her lawyer boy friend's visit to a client at all? It sounds more than dodgey!!!

Hi May. The net is a place where charlatans and liars prosper so i won't question your word when none of us can authenticate this story. I will say that TD was judged harshly if there were any truth in it.If he is under threat i'm not surprised he'd feel safer in Thailand. If he did get a massage no extras Mr Seagal!

Oh, don't worry about people judging me harshly, Storm - it's an occupational hazard! I can take my lumps (sez TD, staggering dizzily from the round of blows landing on her from all sides).

It's a schizophrenic world we inhabit here, anyhow - we gasp for first-hand accounts of meeting Steven, and then deny their authenticity when we get them, regardless of whether it's the source or the details (especially if the details don't fit the image we have of the man).

-TD, sitting uncomfortably atop a picket fence

**Another girlish moment assails the stern and otherwise unflappable TD. An investigation has been launched to discover the source of this unusual turn of events, which has alarmed the community with their increasing frequency. Every effort is being made to contain this outbreak, but officials are concerned that TD is rapidly slipping the surly bonds of harsh realism. "If TD is not held back from taking this direction," said Superintendent Freud, "a cigar will no longer be just a cigar." Stay tuned for further developments on this case.

Wow TD. That's way too technical for me,lol.I worked on contract at a mental home a lot years back and saw some disturbing things. One woman offered me anything if i could get her out (i declined of course).I agree. That is what i'm getting at when i say the man we see on screen may be very different to the real one.If he is,he is. His movies will still be as good.

Hi there, whoever emailed me to alert me to the fact that a link to my law firm's website appeared on this site under a posting related to Mr. Seagal's movie Belly of the Beast, filmed in Thailand, I would really like to thank you. I would also like to ask the Administrator to delete or remove that link, please.

I am not sure if I am amused or angry with my former girlfriend for posting this information about Steven to the site. I am sure she had no bad intention, she was just very excited about her brush with greatness. Steven Seagal is an idol and legend in Thailand, and she was probably showing off a little.

I should clear up a few misconceptions before anyone gets the wrong idea about Steven. Yes I work for Steven when he comes to Thailand, and he has interests here. No, there is no CIA involvement or anything shady. The poor man has always been haunted about CIA connections and this is because everyone assumes that an American who has spent a lot of time living and working abroad and speaking different languages is automatically working for the CIA. I know I get that all the time.

I can't get into any specifics about what Steven and I worked on earlier this year during his stay in Thailand. It was nothing improper and was completely above board and related to Steven's business interests here. It had nothing to do with so called mafia or anything like that (which I assure you is nothing more than a minor annoyance to Steven). I can say Steven has at all times shown an enormous amount of insight into and respect for the Thai culture because of his strong Buddhist beliefs (Thailand is 97% Buddhist population), which I share, and because that is the type of person he is- respectful and extremely intelligent. I can also say that he was occupied at all times in Thailand with a tight filming schedule, but still made time to appeal to the Prime Minister of Thailand to ask for the humane treatment of elephants in captivity, a gesture that made headlines here.

I have had the occasion to work with many so called celebrities when they come to Thailand, and Steven, by far, is the most down to earth, pleasant, genuinely interesting "non-celebrity type" there is, even though he is rightly considered a supersatr by most Thai people. He has never taken advantage of his celebrity status here and has always preferred the low key approach.

I hope no one drew any negative conclusions about this man because that would be extremely unfair, and more importantly, unfounded.

I am happy I found this site. I am a fan and will love to participate in some of the discussions. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and New Year

Ed

Welcome to the site, Ed.

I am curious about something and since you were "on the spot", as it were, perhaps you can satisfy that curiosity; what, then, did Steven do to piss off the Thai press so badly that they could find nothing pleasant to say about him? We had some articles posted here when BOTB was finished filming, and one got the impression the Thai people (as respresented by the press) couldn't wait to see the back of him, indeed, that they would much prefer if, once he left, he didn't come back.

-TD, who is much like the Elephant's Child and always wanting to know why

Sadly I think Steven has quite a knack of pissing people off. It seems he can jog along happily for quite a while, almost to the point of being generally respected, and then he goes off track and offends everyone within miles of him. Certainly the movie people I deal with here in the UK don't think at all highly of him. Shame really, he is his own worst enemy. Why do all his movies go straight to video - is he not able to attract sufficent audience for the box office in the US. Happy christmas everyone. Tiggy

That's probably it. He was, at one point, number 200 of the "top 200" actors people will pay money to go and see, and that was some years ago. His ability to attract an audience disappeared with his last theatrical release in NA, Half Past Dead. Also, as you say, he pisses off people to the point I don't think anyone in Hollywood would work with him ever again. And he's getting old. They only want pretty faced sweet young things in the fullness of their fitness to do martial arts moves in action adventure movies these days.

Not sure about this "number 200" business... I do know that Seagal was at one point THE biggest action star in the world, which many would argue equates to the biggest movie star period. Bigger than Arnold, Sly, etc.

Of course, this is not the case today. Audiences are fickle and get bored easily I guess.

I have always been his fan, and that attraction has only grown...It's only the shallow people who are living vicariously and denying the realities of life, who crave his past in such a strange way...I can't deny that I too am a dreamer, but at least I accept Steven for who he is, and I see the positive things that he has to offer, I try to remember that he is a man who needs love, support, and a pat on the back now and then...I don't see that as being wrong or bad, how could such feelings ever be wrong? :)
