Heavy rain floods White Rock street

A number of White Rock businesses and residences were flooded Monday evening after heavy rain caused manhole covers to pop off and drench Marine Drive.
"There was a large amount of rain that fell in a short amount of time," said White RCMP Const. Janelle Canning.
She said the water pressure in storm drains was enough to dislodge about 20 manhole covers across White Rock.
For about 45 minutes, a popular stretch of Marine Drive between Oxford and Lee streets was closed to traffic and local residents were warned not to leave their homes because of the flood danger. Canning said people were "feverishly pumping out the water" in the few businesses and residences where flooding occurred.
By 7:30 p.m., police, firefighters and city workers had managed to replace the manholes, Canning said.
"Thankfully the weather has cooperated with us," she added.
The rains abated just in time to prevent potentially worse flooding.
Brant Darling, a server at Cosmos Greek Restaurant -- one of the many eateries along the waterfront stretch -- said that for a while, "we were pretty much in danger of getting flooded inside. If the tide was in a little bit further ... they might have not been able to deal with it."
He said the restaurant remained open during the worst of it, with people bringing out brooms to clear the storm drains.
i can't find anything about our man, so I assume he's fine, if a bit wet!
