Cody wants to play with a Mama Moose!
Today was a beautiful day in the woods. -10 to -20 depending on which part of the trail we were on and a bout 10" of soft snow. The snow is a bit of work for me since I haven’t quite got back in condition. But, it was a nice little hike except about every 1/4 mile Cody has to stop and make doggy angels in the snow.

Then we came around a curve and there was Mama moose with her calf. Cody is not a hunter but I think he has visions of playing with all the wild life that wander through our little farm like bears, foxes, coyotes, or whatever.

He pulled me so hard I fell and only with a lot of yelling “Stop It” and “No, No” was I finally able to make him ease up. Meanwhile Mama was standing there obviously upset and trying to decide whether to stomp us into the ground or lead her pride and joy away.

She finally ran away with the calf close on her heels. Of course Cody is very disappointed but I gave him one of the carrot cake doggy bones I make for him and he seems to be over being miffed. I do wonder what goes throuh his head though about the nutty lady he lives with.

wonderful memories

Hallarain , Thank you for sharing that wonderful bit of your life . I especially miss the greatness of Alaska. Only good things for me to remember from there. Oh to see some snow again. I do not get much here. Peace.

Poor Cody..he has a mean mommy :) Or maybe one that knows he would have become moose mush!

Hope you're ok after your fall Hallarian!

We have one lady elephant living in the Anchorage zoo that someone outside is sueing us to have her moved south. Regardless of the fact that Alaskans have gone all out to keep her comfortable. Maggie loves kids and they love her. You can see it in her eyes when the kids show up at the zoo. The move south would be very dangerous for a middle age animal whose only family are the humans who work or visit . Maggie gets more attention than any other animal. Second would be Ah-pun the polar bear in her pond. Ah-pun used to live with a Kodiac bear the same age but the Kodiac had to be moved as she became too aggressive. I hope they don't try to move Maggie, because I think travel would kill her. They say the cold here is bad but want to ship her south in winter????

oh no

I hope they figure a way to keep her . The community really love her and Ah-pun . My daughter has a polar bear from that zoo she named after ah-pun.

I love hearing these little adventures of yours, Hillarian! :) What a sight. To be hiking in the beautiful, snow covered woods, and come upon a moose and her baby. I've come across a herd of deer in the winter while hiking, and that was a thrill for me! Could Cody have been deliberately trying to knock you down, so you wouldn't appear as a threat to mama moose? Who knows what does run through his head, but I'm sure it's only for your best interest at times like those. :) Anyway, sounds like quite a welcome home hike to me! :D

These are great pictures, Pantera! :) I especially liked the one with the gangly dog sprawled all over the couch. Reminds me of my teenage nephew--all legs and lazy! :D

More animals in the news. :)

1) Seven year old hipopotamus Mafalda, nurses her 7-day old baby at Buenos Aires, Zoo, Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004. Zookepeers have been unable to determine the sex of the newborn, the newest member of the Argentine zoo.

2) A Emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator subgrisescens) sits on a branch in his enclosure in the Zurich, Switzerland, zoo, Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004. The bearded Emperor tamarins live in tropical forests of Brazil, Peru, and Bolivia.

3) An adolescent rain forest Indonesian orangutan makes faces as he enjoys some leaves during a warm afternoon, Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, in Taipei Municipal Zoo, Taiwan. As an Indian summer lingers on the island the zoo remains a popular destination on week ends for urban dwellers who have little chance to see nature or wild animals in the capital.

4) Newborn rhinoceros Baabuu (L), born on November 4 nuzzles his mother Ellora during their first visit to the outdoor pen at the zoo of Basel, November 10, 2004. Baabuu is the second newborn rhinoceros at the zoo in Basel this year and the 29th newborn rhinoceros in the history of the zoological garden of Basel.

5) Sumatran orangutan infant, Cinta, and his mother Indah command attention November 9, 2004 at the San Diego Zoo in San Diego, California. This week is International Orangutan Awareness Week at the Zoo, and the goal is to raise public awareness about the plight of orangutans in the wild -- a critically endangered species which may become extinct in 7 - 10 years due to rampant logging of their habitat. The Zoo hopes to teach guests about the illegal logging crisis, and the importance of only buying wood products which have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as forest and orangutan friendly harvested wood. NO SALES.
