Ain't I always quiet...? ;-)))
I am fine, Serena, Thank you very much for your concern.
I'm just busy making things for Christmas, and my Hound is not well then I stay with her - she can't go up the stairs to my "office": Japanese stairs are NOT hound-friendly... :-(
The vet came this afternoon, said there is a (canine) gastric flu epidemic in the area... I'm not used to seeing my big beast so lazy, I freaked out... She should be her normal self again within 2-3 days.

The bright side of my big one's illness is I have finally found a vet who is willing to try and take care of the wee one's teeth without anesthesia...! I thought the 7 other vets to whom I asked whether they'd do it feared for their fingers - that's what *they* said... - then I asked this tiny Lady why she did not fear for hers... she laughed and said that as far as she knows, the reason why most vets are reluctant to perform scaling without anesthesia is that it takes more time while they can charge less... which rang more true to my ears than the other 7's "excuse", when you consider it's not their fingers they put in the dog's mouth and a tech or the dog owner is holding the dog still...
Now when you have an old dog who cannot be put under because his/her heart would not stand it, and his/her teeth really need some cleaning/scaling, and you know that a decayed tooth can turn into a systemic infection, what are you supposed to do...? I got the answer now...: either find a vet who does not mind "wasting" her time <G>, or tell your regular vet that you are willing to pay the high price. Silly me... I had spent a day on the phone trying to find a vet who'd be willing to "risk their fingers" for my wee one's sake, while I should just have talked $$$... Duh!!
...Sorry for rambling...
I'm gonna go back downstairs now and see how my beasts <G> are doing...

Wellness to All,
and Happy Thanksgiving to All our American Friends!

That's not rambling, Jampa. Now, I can ramble. :D Glad to hear your "beasts" are going to be okay! :) You must really love them to spend all that time--and money--trying to find just the right vet for them. They are all family after alll, right? :) And glad to hear you're doing okay, too! :D

Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes. :)

You're welcome, Isa Marie and Heather. :) Glad you liked the pictures.

The mom and baby were adorable, weren't they, Heather? :) And I really got a kick out of the tiger and the pig myself--but I did laugh out loud at Amos' remark. :D

Oh sure, they are Family... whether I chose them or not, from the moment I adopt an animal I consider I am committed to them.

The wee one spent 10 months alone in a garage after living 13 years in a comfy house with lots of "human interaction"(translation?), because she had become a wee bit incontinent... the guy said she should be put to sleep but was not willing to spend the money; I told him that when he's old and deaf and incontinent like her I hope his relatives have a different "take" on the subject... She's still full of life, and after just 1 week here she was running again and full of beans, clearly enjoying life... She'll go to the Rainbow Bridge when *she* has had enough, when *she* wants to go... you can see it in their eyes when life has become too much of a struggle and they don't enjoy life anymore; then it is time for the vet to help them take their last journey... but in the meantime... they deserve a good life as much as we do.

They give us all they have... if they had money they'd give it too ;-)
As long as I can afford my cigarettes, my coffee and my evening's Gin & Tonic, I consider I can also afford the vet bills... when it starts looking like I can't afford the vet bills, I'll stop smoking, drinking coffee and Gin ;-))))) and at that point I'll have to thank them for taking care of MY health too <VVBG>...
I *never* had an animal that "costed" me more than my little "faults"!

My big Puppy is much better already, her eyes are bright and she's walking tall again.
This morning my Daughter left for school with a light heart and a happy smile on her face... :)))
How much would you pay for that...? ;-)))
It's just priceless.

I love those pics that you post here...
They talk about Harmony...

Didn't God "promise" us a time would come when the Wolf and the Sheep would stand side by side in Harmony...? Memory fails me... but I know it's something of that sort, and I want to see it here, on this Earth... if not in this life, in the next! ;-)

May your day be just as bright as mine
and
Wellness to All...!

Was hearing today about a dog that a way off relative of mine had..this huge german shepard that would walk up to cats & just look at them-even though he could have swallowed them whole.
He use to get taken for walks but as he got older he could hardly move-so one time on his last walk,he sat down on the railroad tracks & wouldn't move..his owner tried everything(supposenly) & he himself almost got hit by the train trying to get the dog off....guess it was his version of suicide :(

That is a very strange story, Amos.
I never heard of a dog committing suicide...
Possibly this old boy got some kind of seizure and could not move any more, but then I don't understand how his "owner" could fail *carrying* the dog away.
The average weight of a German Shepard being 32 kilos, how heavy can a "huge" GS be...? 42...? 45 kilos...?
Is your relative such a light-weight that he could not carry his dog on a 2 meters distance...? Our "previous" dog weighed 13 kilos less than I do, and I was able to carry her... My Hubby's got *2* slipped discs and weighs approx 10 kilos more than my Hound, but he is still able to pull her towards on when she's lying and refusing to move her butt (yes, she has got a very hard head <G>)........

Heather, my cats are 14+ and still in great form.
Our ex land-lords Persian cat died in his sleep at the age of 24...
18 years is not exceptional for a cat, then you can reasonably hope that your Girl will be with you for at least 10 more years... :)))))) and I wish you she sticks around even longer.
I'm sending her scruffles, and my 2 fierce mice hunters say Hi...

Wellness to All...

I have a beautiful long hair grey cat that I rescued from the 5 year old brat across the street. She would lock her in a rabbit cage and not feed her for days! I know she was only 5 but her parents should have been watching over her. So I confronted them and they acted as if she had done nothing wrong. So when they went to work I went over and put her in my house and left a note stating if they wanted her back to call the animal control dept. and I would talk with them. That was 7 years ago and about 2000 dollars. But she has been the best pet I have ever owned.

The abuse connection

No child has such a "behaviour" innocently... Even at 2 years of age, a child is able to understand that it is "bad" to starve an animal, be it a fish, mouse, cat or else... it is not hard to make them understand that it is cruel to tear off a spider/fly's legs or wings, or flood a cricket's nest/hole... Kids are not brainless idiots unable to understand what is fair and what is cruel, and you don't need to be a child psychiatrist to explain what is a respectful (or, even, simply *decent*) attitude.

Trouble is... some parents just don't care, can't be bothered, let the kid do whatever he/she wants as long as *they* don't suffer by it.
The kid is certainly not allowed to step on the sofa with dirty shoes, it would ruin it, but he/she can torment an animal because *they* don't suffer the consequences...

As much as it hurts me, I understand that some people just don't give a crap about animals. Their right... I suppose... BUT... it is extremely dumb, to say the least, to let a child do such things, because cruelty is cruelty, no matter who the victim is, and in the torturer/abuser's psyche, the "pattern" is the same, regardless of the nature/species of the victim: the satisfaction of feeling "superior" to one's victim, since he/she cannot defend him/herself and can only *endure*. If the kid you're talking about, Bbryant, was abusing this poor cat "only", the odds are that she was not going to stop being an abuser on the day you did this poor cat the "favor" of shielding her from this family... because the kid obviously enjoyed what she did to this poor creature, and her parents most probably never took the time/consideration to make her understand she was doing "wrong". For her, *you* probably were the bad guy, for taking her "toy" away from her - not *her*, she was just "having fun" with the cat......
Abusers don't suddenly become abusers once grown-up - they were abusive kids before being abusive adults. Child abusers, rapers, etc. are just one big family... and before "testing" their "power" on children, old people, women, etc., they got their hand in on more defenceless beings: animals.

Letting a child do such things is absolutely irresponsible, and not only criminal towards the child's current (animal) victim but also towards the future (animal + human) victims AND towards the child her/himself.
Am I exaggerating...?
NO, I am not... but if you don't believe me, you can find loads of documentation on the net... here's just one (simple) web-page on the subject: http://www.pet-abuse.com/connection/

Your across-the-street neighbours are irresponsible idiots, Bbryant... and I pity their little girl, for she obviously needs some help that her parents are - just as obviously - unable to provide her.

At least the cat is now safe... Thank you for rescuing her...
I wish there were more people willing to intervene when they "spot" abuse.

Wellness to you and to your protégé...

Just heard about some whales and dolphins have "beached" themselves there are no happy stories here i heard they all perished...i was so sad to see all these beautiful animals dead ...

Heather I have heard of whales doing that but never dolphins. That's a shame that they all died. I was watching the animal planet channel how they tried to save 4 or 5 whales after they were on the beach, but they were so far on the beach that they could not move them. They also died. So many people tried to save them but there was nothing that they could do. The whales just didn't want to go back into the water.

I hadn't heard that until your post, Heather. Thanks for mentioning it. It's so sad. :( And the scientists don't even know why exactly, although they have their speculations. And Kathy, they have volunteers helping here also and it appears they're having some success. :)

Beached whales die off Tasmania
BBC News, 11-29-2004

It is not known what caused the beachings. More than 100 whales and dolphins have died in two separate beachings in islands off Tasmania in Australia. Ninety-seven pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins died off King Island over the weekend, and several others have died off Maria Island.

Volunteers have been trying to prevent others from suffering the same fate, by carrying them back to deeper waters.

Scientists have flown in to try to establish why so many of the mammals have died.

Tasmanian wildlife officer Shane Hunniford said about half of the 53-strong pod of whales off Maria Island had already died, and efforts were under way to save the other beached animals.

"As I'm looking out to sea now, I can see seven people holding rescue whales and beyond that there's a police launch out there, and there's a mother and calf out there, so we've had a good success rate, we're pretty happy," Mr Hunniford told reporters.

"In terms of degrees of health, some are good, some are not so good. If things keep going the way they're going now we're doing alright," he said.

The BBC's correspondent in Sydney, Phil Mercer, says just why so many have become stranded on the beaches remains a mystery.

In the past, scientists have speculated that predators such as killer whales may have forced them onto land.

Other researchers have suggested that they are attracted by high levels of nutrients in the water, or that they become disorientated by the noise of oil and gas installations.

A year ago, 100 pilot whales died on a remote beach on the southwest coast of Tasmania.
