Gambling that I'm really staying home a while I brought home some baby chicks and turkeys. They stay in a warm brooder box we built in a room Cody is no lobger allowed in as he'd quickly kill the chicks and turkeys. He's really upset because he can hear them peeping and I won't let him in there. I figure I'll have turkeys for my Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes I give next November and December and nice big brown eggs too.

Cody just has to live with the birds.
That's quite interesting, Hallarian. :) I assume this room is in your house. Does the peeping annoy you, or does it just become white noise and you don't even hear it any more? :D Will those boxes you're preparing be for the people in your area who could use a bit of help around the holidays? I've never had fresh eggs like that. Wonder if I'd notice the difference.

Peeping chicks? Lovely! I have quite a few birds - about 40 altogether; cockatiels, parakeets, white and wood doves, zebra finches, lovebirds, a pocket-parrot, and a very noisy nanday conure. They have huge cages and a room all their own, which is right next to my bedroom. The doves coo me to sleep at night, and they ALL wake me up in the mornings. It is really relaxing listening to them sing and coo and squak. Today was bath day - they all get a big pan of water to splash in, then they spend an hour preening. Despite the mess - yes, they get messy - seeds, feathers, dust, and garden fertilizer, but they are worth it. The leftover seed are thrown outside for their cousins, and the poop and feathers go into the compost - nothing is wasted. Lots of work but I enjoy it.
Also have a few dogs too - two yard dogs and two small house dogs; keep me busy too. No cats - am allergic to them and cats and birds do not go together, nor do cats and houseplants - and I have tons of houseplants. I "rescue" them from work when they are being discarded simply because they have scale or bugs - bring them home, wash them off, spray them down with natural bug killer, wash them again, spray them again, etc., and give them compost tea, until they are healthy and happy again. They are like children to me - they need fed, watered, and their soil changed, and of course, they need talked to and relaxing music played to them. I also say good things to the water I use for them.
Critters are cool - and I don't eat them either :)
Peace

That is fascinating, Kickingbird!! :) I've never known anyone with so many birds. I'd love to hear the sounds they all make together like that. When you say they splash around on bath day, are they all out at once? I wasn't sure if they would "get along" with each other, or if you would have to do certain kinds at a time.

When you say "natural bug killer" for your plants, is that something you've made up yourself, or something you can buy commercially? And what is that "compost tea". If you don't me asking.

I found this glimpse into your home very interesting! Nice to see you around again, Kickingbird. :)
You do indeed seem to be a nurturer of nature--of any type! :)

Thanks, Pantera and Amos. :) Glad you enjoyed them.

Amos, I'm surprised the hamster "made it" there, being so noisy at night. :D
Or did it? ;) :D

Bird sounds ... ah, let me see ... the doves coo a lot of course, either at each other or the wall or water bowl. The cockatiels all have their own songs. There are three of them that sing in unison with a "version" of the song from the Wizard of Oz "If I Only Had A Brain". They can wolf-whistle too in unison, very slowly, almost like a prayer. The conure tries to sing but gets frustrated and starts squaking. The other birds all have their own little trills and songs and chirps. It can get quite noisy.
Bath time usually is inside each cage. All the cages are big - 4x4x6 feet, and a huge corner walk-in, well, they are all very large cages. Can't let them all out together because, no, they wouldn't get along. I put large pans of water into each cage and they splash and preen for about an hour. Some of them get showers with a spray bottle with warm water. The doves will lift up each wing so I can spray their "armpits".
The bug killer I use is derived from mums. I only use it indoors on the houseplants. Outdoors I use other varieties of natural, non-toxic sprays, including hot pepper spray. I don't want to kill beneficial insects like ladybugs, lacewings, and wasps - wasps kill bugs. I also encourage garter and king snakes - they eat bugs too. I frequently find them sunning on a rock, or hiding in a half-flower-pot left especially for them.
Compost tea is from GardensAlive! and is "brewed" with an aerator (like a fish-tank pump) from compost. It is liquid gold for plants. Of course I also compost everything from the kitchen, and yard debris. I try to stay as "organic" as possible. The song "Home-grown Tomatoes" by John Denver keeps running through my mind :)
Good to be back here - would like to post more often except this IS garden time and it does keep me busy but I will try to stop by as often as I can. Thanks for the welcome :)
Peace

Pantera-
Glad to share :) ... actually my nickname comes from a couple sources: mostly because I'm a bird person, who practices martial arts [as in "kicking"], and also from the film Dances With Wolves. The holy man [played by Graham Greene] was named KickingBird, and I admire his character. I don't kick birds, however lol.

Thanks for sharing all that, Kickingbird. :) I love the song, "If I only had a brain." I'd really like to the cockatiels' version. :D What an "interesting" day bath day is at your house. More fun than the traditional Saturday night bath, from the sounds of it! LOL I can just picture those doves lifting their "armpits". :D

And thanks also for the info on the compost tea. Maybe some day you could post a thread in off topic on composting. When you have time--and it's not "garden time", of course. :D I'd be interested in learning more first-hand from someone who actually does it. Bearing in mind I don't even have the most basic knowledge.

And that was interesting about how you chose the name "Kickingbird", in your reply to Pantera. :) Besides being a kicking person :D, I don't remember that name in Dancing With Wolves, but I only saw it once when it first came out at the theaters. Maybe it's worth watching again sometime.

Anyway, we're glad to see you whenever you've dusted off the garden dirt and are taking a few minutes to relax. :)

Glad to share :) ... too bad I can't record the birds singing. I know it could be done, but I'd have to "sneak" because if they hear me they get excited and stop singing. Also, the doves will coo at all hours - usually in the morning but also in the evening. In fact, they're at it right now. Their room is dark and it's 9:30 p.m. but they're still doing the ole "coo and bob" at each other.
Yes, I will try to dig into the compost issue soon. It's fun to put it all together, stir it up, and wait for the good stuff.
The weather has been pretty mild this winter, and it seems to be warming up nicely; however, we could still have a cold snap or snow or ice. Peas are in the ground, and this weekend the onions and greens will go in.
Will post again soon. Glad to be here and ya'll have a good weekend :)
