SDT interview with Muen magazine writer Shauna O Donnell from LA

Interview with Brennan of Southern Death Threat!!
Current mood: rebellious
Category: Music

By Shauna O'Donnell

MUEN: HI BRENNAN AND THANK YOU FOR TALKING WITH US....

BRENNAN: Thanks for having me!

MUEN: SO WHERE ARE YOU GUYS FROM?

BRENNAN: We are from van****ingcouver B.C Canada. I grew up 9 hrs north of here in Prince George. Scotty is from Calgary, Ken is from Fernie BC, and Jason is from powell river BC.

MUEN: BRENNAN YOU FOUNDED THIS BAND IN 2005. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT WHY YOU CHOSE THE NAME "SOUTHERN DEATH THREAT?"

BRENNAN: I was trying to start a project where I could fully let loose on some heavy riffs of my own and just needed the name. I was walking to a New York Yankees baseball game in Seattle and just finished watching CNN. Being from Northern Canada and the US being a nuclear superpower.. it made sense. Basically to scare the **** outta yall... laughs.

MUEN: TELL US ABOUT YOUR SELF TITLED CD. WHEN DID YOU RELEASE IT, HOW MANY TRACKS ARE ON IT, AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE SO FAR?

BRENNAN: We released it August 30th 2007. 12 songs. The reponse has been great. Here in Vancouver it's really picking up steam. Todd Hancock from CFOX is the ****ing man down in the states! and has been awesome as well. People from Tennessee seem to rock the **** out to our **** and they ****ing rule too....

MUEN: IS THERE A PARTICULAR SONG ON THE ALBUM THAT YOU LIKE MORE THAN THE OTHERS?

BRENNAN: Yes of course "Screwface" ... When we play that song live, the place goes nuts! Last night after we played it, the crowd was chanting SDT... SDT... SDT.... We were so ****ing pumped!

MUEN: YOU WROTE ALL THE MUSIC FOR THE CD RIGHT? I KNOW YOU ARE A HUGE PANTERA FAN BUT, WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM WHEN YOU ARE WRITING MUSIC? IS IT USUALLY WHEN IT'S QUIET AND YOU'RE ALONE?

BRENNAN: All these riffs came when I'd play around 420pm. If I'm listening to Pantera or Zakk ****ing Wylde, I'm always thinking about the riff. Usually when getting home and jamming away by myself is when I'm at my best. Then taking the mapped out songs right to our drummer Scott Cattleguard. This guy ****ing ripps my head off everyday. He sees the vision and lays the **** down hard! He ****ing rules!! ha ha! Lots of pre-production stuff I lay at Ken's house so we can start going over lyrics.

MUEN: THE FIRST SONG THAT YOU AND KEN (LEAD SINGER) WROTE TOGETHER WAS CALLED "BEYOND FOREVER". IS IT TRUE THIS SONG IS ABOUT DIMEBAG DARRELL?

BRENNAN: Ya, I had that riff for about a year and then laid it on Kenny. Kenny really new how much Dimebag Darrell meant to me and was probably the easiest song we wrote together. Rip Dime.... Peace to Rita and Vinnie.

MUEN: YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HIM ONCE AFTER A PANTERA SHOW. WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO BE IN THE PRESENCE OF YOUR HERO? WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO THAT NIGHT?

BRENNAN: That was the greatest day of my life! I had emailed their management to see how i could get Dime to sign my guitar. I went to the sound check at the Pantera /Slayer show in 2001. Guy Skyes, the manager, came over grabbed my axe and took it to Dime to sign. I didnt get a picture of us together until after the show. Dime came out behind the Coliseum and walked right onto the bus. I thought my chances of meeing him were gone as the bus ****ed off. The bus turned around and came back right in front of us . Dime got out and gave me a Coors Light! He was the best guy ever. Dime was so pumped about the killer show Pantera had just played. Kerry King was there too and we were all drinking. I took a picture of Dime and Kerry together, then Kerry took one of me and Dime... then Dime took a picture of me and Kerry. Laughs.... I called my sister in law telling her Dimebag Darrell and Kerry King just used your ****ing camera!!

MUEN: YOUR SONGS ARE BEING PLAYED REGULARLY ON LOCAL RADIO STATIONS IN YOUR AREA. ARE THEY CURRENTLY BEING PLAYED HERE IN THE STATES, AND WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER WAYS YOU ARE GETTING WORD OUT ABOUT YOUR MUSIC?

BRENNAN: The local radio station 99.3 CFOX has been very good to us. We are so thankful for the afternoon with DJ Todd Hancock. He is single handedly the best Canadian dude youll ever meet. Todd always plays "Screwface" and hit the floor. He also has "Screwface" as the backround music for traffic updates. The turning point for SDT has been when we met him although when I see him, I know I will be so ****ing hungover! He is my bro forever. It hasn't been officially released in the states yet, but fans can still get the cd through paypal from www.southerndeaththreat.com or myspace. I have already sent cds to fans in California, Texas, NY, OH, Tennessee, Illisnois... I ****ing love Americans!!! Soon enough we will be coming down to the US to spread the word and doing stuff with MUEN and with Shauna's help as well...

MUEN: THE BAND IS FEATURED IN THE NEW STEVEN SEAGAL MOVIE "A HIGHER FORM OF LEARNING". WHEN IS THE MOVIE BEING RELEASED? WHAT WAS YOUR PART IN THE FILM AND WHAT SONG WAS USED?

BRENNAN: The movie comes out this summer. Filming was cool as we had never got to do that before. Steven Seagal is a detective looking for a serial killer who is at a Southern Death Threat concert. We're playing at a bar in Memphis when Seagal comes in looking for this dude. He spots the killer right beside the stage close to where im standing. The killer then runs out of the bar to evade capture and Seagal follows him through the bar **** kicking everyone. Seagal still can whoop some major ass !! Their are 2 of our songs featured in the movie "Beyond Forever" and "Rusty." Country star, Mark Collie is in the movie too and he is going to do some recording with us. Mark sounds like Johhny Cash and drinks a mean whiskey! laughs.... Watch for the collaboration between us soon!

MUEN: WHAT WAS STEVEN SEAGAL LIKE?

BRENNAN: Seagal was awesome to us. When it was time for him to do his scene, he came right up to us and shook our hands and checked out our guitars; and talked with us for a bit. Seagal is ****ing huge. It was an honor for me personally as I have lots of Seagal dvds. Ironically the song "Screwface" actually came from one of his movies, "Marked for Death." All in all, he was cool and can't wait to see this on the big screen.

MUEN: IF YOU COULD TOUR WITH ANY BAND, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

BRENNAN: Pantera isn't going to happen or anything with Dime, so I'll go with Metallica of course. Although sharing the stage with Ozzy would ****ing rip also.

MUEN: HAVE YOU FILMED ANY VIDEOS, AND IF SO, WHERE CAN WE GO CHECK THEM OUT?

BRENNAN: We have a video for "Wanted Sevenfold" on our myspace page and on YouTube. We're going to do a video for "Screwface" in a couple of weeks and sent it to Headbangers Ball..

MUEN: SO... WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? ARE YOU CURRENTLY WRITING NEW SONGS?

BRENNAN: I'm always writing songs to keep it fresh for the fans. We plan on touring the states as their is way more people down there.

MUEN: WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?

BRENNAN: In my free time I watch hockey with my gal Tina. We go to concerts and try to support other local bands in town.

MUEN: WHAT IS "BEYOND EYLES MUSIC INC.?"

BRENNAN: It's my publishing name as I do it all myself. You know the saying "if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself."

MUEN: ANYTHING ELSE YOU'D LIKE TO SAY OR ADD?

BRENNAN: I really appreciate the support from you Shauna, and MUEN. Just know this, you can come up to us anytime - drink or take pictures with us. we love our fans and that's what keeps me going. Dimebag Darrell was so down to earth to me and was a huge inspiration on my life. I will always conduct myself like he did with the fans. I'll come and play right at your school, work , or house and you won't get rid of us.. haha. We wont forget where we came from, and still eat Kraft dinners.. laughs. Come to our shows or email us if you want to talk or ask questions any ****ing time..... Thanks for doing this Shauna you rule !!!!!!
SDT.... SDT.... SDT.... SDT....
Peace out!

Did anybody read the part "can't wait to see this on the big screen".

Could it be true? Or is it wishfull thinking?

Peace

I think he meant that in a nice way, and I agree. As I've posted before, Steven strikes a more imposing figure at his height and more filled out than when he was a younger man. I go on about his height, I know, but he;s got to be more than 6'2. When you see him in person, like I did at his concert, that's when you realise just how tall this man is. I've always been crazy about a tall man!! I enjoyed reading the interview too. I wonder if Steven did a little strumming on their guitar.

I read he's actually 6ft 6". All male hunk, so much talent it oozes, i think I would faint and never wake up if I met him. Too overwhelming.

Me too. I wanted to meet him, but the thought of how I'd behave if I did was just too scary. I'd embarrass myself, in front of my hero. Oh dear me no, that just would not do, know what I mean!! But gawking at him close up wasn't too bad anyway. This is an enchanter of the first degree, our Mr. Steven Seagal. I mean the sight of this man, just causes a persor to "come over all queer" as we say here in the UK. My mouth stayed open the whole time. I don't even get that way about my fella. Good thing he's also a Seagal fan I say!!
