"Steven Seagal and his opinions
12:57 PM, Manila Time | Media & Entertainment
I debated all day yesterday whether to blog about Steven Seagal's visit to the Philippines and the way his opinions were sensationalized in the newspapers and broadcast media. My initial reaction was to ignore the whole thing. Well, the whole thing will not go away. Seagal's favorable impression of Gloria Arroyo is being made out by the media as some kind of worthy endorsement.
Bloody hell.
Seagal does not live in the Philippines and has no personal experience with the way Gloria Arroyo runs the government. He admits as much.
“From what I heard from my American and Japanese friends, she’s a talented and wonderful human being, with the ability to be firm when the situation demands. I’m really a great fan of hers.” [Manila Bulletin]
He also admits that he intends to make a film in the Philippines and release a recording album here.
Steven Seagal is a fading Hollywood star (not an actor; the guy can't act) who hasn't had a hit in the U.S. in a decade. He admits having interest in the Philippines as a market for his projects which, apparently, no longer has a niche in the U.S. markets.
Seagal arrived in the Philippines right after the rumors floated that the leadership of the Iglesia ni Cristo has decided to endorse Gloria Arroyo giving rise to reasonable speculations that her victory is assured.
Seagal wants something and is greasing his way in. He is gambling--hoping that with with a Gloria victory, the Philippine markets would open up for him. If Gloria loses, or is thrown out of Malacañang, too bad for this has-been Hollywood jock.
The mileage that the media gave his statements, espcially the context in which they were reported, is deplorable.
The superstar treatment that the Department of Tourism and Dick Gordon extended to him is sickening."
