11:15 a.m. PDT July 4, 2004 - A 59-year-old National City minister was arrested for allegedly striking fear of the devil into three woman to convince them to have sex with him, La Mesa Police said Saturday.

Carlos Romero, who lives in the 2700 block of Prospect Street, was arrested at his workplace in Kearny Mesa yesterday, La Mesa police Sgt. Dan Willis said.

An investigation began May 8, when a 31-year-old La Mesa woman reported the suspect to police, La Mesa police Lt. Allen White said.

The woman told police her pastor had convinced her that only by having sex with him could she be protected from the devil, White said. The woman said she had been coerced to have sex with the cleric numerous times.

During the investigation, police found two other women who told similar stories accusing the pastor of the same incident, White said.

One of the women -- a 38-year-old -- started having sex with the suspect in January. The other victim -- a 37-year-old woman -- began having sex with the suspect in March of 1996, White said.

The suspect is accused of having oral sex with all three victims, sexual intercourse with two of the victims and tried anal sex with one of the women, White said.

Romero is a minister who has a congregation of about 12 people and has nondenominational services in the homes of his Apostolic Church members.

"We haven't determined whether he has been officially ordained," Willis said.

Romero was booked into the county jail on suspicion of inducing consent to sexual acts by fraud or fear and making criminal threats, Willis said.

One of the victims said Romero threatened her with bodily injury if she told anyone about the encounters, the sergeant said.

A clerk at the jail said Romero is out on bail.

Did you know, that those who are sent away for sexual abuse of any sort ...

... are hated the most by prisoners in prisons ... it's unacceptable even by the common criminals' standards ...

There's been this story on the news here recently that a teacher from the High School I used to go to had his teaching license suspended after an investigation was started due to suspicion of him having some sort of sexual contact with a female student ... that's just sick ... but he was one of the greatest guys at school and a great teacher at that who was into sports and was married; you'd never guess of any such thing against him ... Sexual offenders are harshly punished here ... the tolerance is even lower for such as for the murderers (in both cases, the criminals will get sent to prison but the sexual offender will get harsher treatment once on the inside).

Whenever I hear something about a teacher being involved with a student these days, I always question first, if there's been no such behaviour in the past, does the student in question have a beef with the teacher (say, for getting poor marks) and is using an accusation of sexual abuse to get the teacher into trouble.

Sadly, with a handful of bad-apple teachers having contaminated a group of people who have dedicated themselves to working in what is, these days, a really tough profession, a resourceful student can get their own back against a teacher they don't like by playing the "sexual abuse" card.

The student, of course, being a teenager, couldn't possibly be lying. And if she is, the stigma will never be cleansed from the teacher, even if he is cleared.

I think 31, 38 and 37 y/o women ought to have more sense than to fall for crap like that--one of them for 8 years, one for 6 months, and the other on "numerous occasions". Be responsible for your own actions at that age.

Well....it happens.

I'm not saying that they are not responsible, but it happens. Many times these individuals (don't know how) brainwash the smartest of people.

Where my mother lives this Minister was arrested also. He had sex with all the women in his congregation (over the years). He was also leading people to believe that they wouldn't go to heaven unless they had sex with him, and brought their daughters to him as soon as they turned 12 y/o so he could give them their ticket to heaven.

It sure does happen.

Interesting story, Jalu. Thanks for sharing, but that surely means that I'll be going to hell.

Unfortunatly there are sick people all over the world in every occupation. Their major blunders end up being someone elses hardships in life.

Common sense doesn't apply, unfortunately, if you really, really believe you have something to lose by not doing it or something to gain if you do.

Self-interest was at work here by ALL the parties concerned, minister and women alike, and when the women woke up at the end of the day and realised they'd been had, it was then and only then the cry of "sexual misconduct" was raised.

Up until then, they were doing something to get something.

Don't get me wrong - the minister is a bad guy, I'm not making excuses for him. But I'm with Serena - these women had the right to make a responsible decision about what to do with their bodies, and they chose to do something which they fully believed would get them something in return. I'm afraid I haven't got much sympathy for them.

Brainwashed? Maybe. Rape? I don't think so. They consented; even though the consent appears to be coerced, which makes it the lesser charge of sexual misconduct, in reality, they were being offered something, something they wanted badly enough to agree to do something so stupid. It was their choice. They do not live in a closed society where turning the minister down would have resulted in them being socially ostracised, or be meted some other punishment that would have resulted in a loss of status.

Remember the discussion elsewhere about Bill Cosby and his stand on black people today? One can say the same about women today and the hard-won rights of women through the women's movement.

No, no one is saying these women asked for it. But they did have a choice; it was simply that common sense left the building when they encountered this man. They believed he had power over them, and by believing it, gave their power away.

That's just horrible...
It's almost unbelievable that these women could be convinced of things such as this...
Brainwashing is exactly what it is...
And I guess fear and intimidation can be very powerful...
The scariest part is thinking of all the young children who he may have preyed upon, that gives me the creeps...
I hope more people come forward, for some reason, I'm sure there will be some more...
It's truly sad that religion and the church is used for such degrading purposes, what a sicko this guy is...
He'll be the one that is damned now...
Makes you wonder if he even believes in what he preaches at all, doesn't it?
I hear this happens a lot with doctors these days, too...
Gotta be so careful...
