I'm not a sci-fi fan (never mind Star Trek) but this is never good news.

Another sad news.

Thanks for the news, Hallarian.

Very sad news, Hallarian. Thanks for letting us know.
Such a horrible disease, that takes a tremendous toll on the family, as well as the patient.
My thoughts and prayers go out to both.

James Doohan, 84, In Beginning Stages Of Disease

POSTED: 9:05 pm EDT July 6, 2004

SEATTLE -- Actor James Doohan -- who played Scotty on the 60's "Star Trek" TV series, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Doohan's agent says the 84-year-old was diagnosed with Alzheimer's "within the last couple months."

Agent Steven Stevens tells the The Associated Press that Doohan is in the beginning stages of the progressive neurological disorder.

Doohan also has suffered for some time with Parkinson's disease, diabetes and fibrosis due to chemical exposure during World War II and the D-Day invasion in France.

Doohan lives in in Redmond, Wash., a suburb northeast of Seattle.

How sad ... of course I'm a trekkie since day one of the original series. The Star Trek genre is more than sci-fi - it is a way of life, of thinking, of philosophy.
And, has anyone heard of the new garbage burner that burns so hot it actually converts toxic waste into it's basic elements? It is called a Plasma Converter and is developed by StarTech Environmental Corporation. It is for real. Star Trek has and continues to influence so many aspects of our lives ... flip cell phones, the space shuttle Enterprise, etc., etc.
Let's say a quiet prayer for Mr. Doohan and hope his twilight years will be peaceful and without suffering.

Oh what a shame. He was always one of the best characters. Remember that fight in the bar with the Klingons? And when he had to tell Kirk the ship simply could not defy physics? He never liked Willaim Shatner on the show. They were not friendly. I hope he is made comfortable anyway while he suffers this.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease. What's worse, is that he became a father not too long ago - I don't recall whether it was a boy or a girl, but I think the child was born in the late 90s, 1998, or 99.

He's Canadian, eh.

Very, very sad news, indeed!

Did you know that Reagan also had Alzheimer's and at the end of his path, he couldn't remember many parts of his presidency.

<sarcasm alert>

Gosh, Yu, I had no idea! See, I've been living in a complete news blackout since the Reagan administration ended, and, of course, I'm too stupid to understand anything that I've read in the paper or seen on the news because... what was I saying?

<end sarcasm alert>

Yu, I wouldn't get so annoyed with some of the things you say if you didn't automatically assume I - or anyone else - knew absolutely nothing about anything. This isn't an apology, by the way; merely an explanation. I'll knock off the rough responses if you stop assuming I'm too stupid to tie my shoes.

-TD, more irritated that usual today, so probably should read and not answer for a while... ah, what the hell

Are you trying to start something here?

Why do you assume that I assume ... LOL
I didn't assume you or anybody else here are dumb. I'm just giving you some information ... whether you know it or not. Starting the question with "Did you know..." has two possible answers: "yes" or "no" (I don't mean to insult you, but if you don't get that...) ... Also, since this is a forum, some times a discussion can continue further ...

Anyways, to stick on topic, here's a picture of him:

A bit harsh TD.We were young once. I know it seems ages ago,for me anyway. Hey i was almost a punk! But i saw sense and followed The Jam.

Yud is a gud kid! I knew about Reagan getting that, but maybe some didn't. I think David Niven and a few others(famous i mean)too had it.
If Kirk was the rugged authority,Scotty was the backbone of the ship's crew, always reliable. I like many sci fi elements, but, for once i will stay on topic lol.

I'm reacting rather than responding, today. A combination of lack of sleep, bad weather, a migraine that won't go away because of the weather, too many people telling me that I'm stupid because I'm old, female and single, and Yu's youthful I-know-it-all-isms and manner of delivery got him the straw that broke the camel's back. Sorry.

Scotty was a fun character on the series. James Doohan, like the other cast members, was allowed to develop his character, give him a background and depth that characters in the later series lacked. It was his idea that Scotty should wear a kilt - in the right tartan! - when in formal dress. It was attention to details like this that made the original series so much better than those following on. Not to mention that the episodes in the original series were mini-morality plays, whereas the later series were not (and when they did try to do some episodes that way, the results were pretty awful).

The crossover episode, where Scotty ends up on Picard's Enterprise, and particularly the scene where he goes down to the holodeck to get blotto on the bridge of the original Enterprise (alas, my model that got thrown out in the move!), I thought was particularly well done and very touching.

You think I'll let you off the hook that easily?

"Yu's youthful I-know-it-all-isms and manner of delivery got him the straw that broke the camel's back"

Would you like me to put a cast on you? Maybe a permanent one?

I'm suggesting there are other ways of imparting information than assuming people don't know - which is what "did you know...." does - it infers the answer is going to be "no", and puts the person asking the question in the position of being an insufferable know-it-all. It took me a while - when I was, oh, in my early 20's - to figure out why people were getting so pissed at me when I used that phrase. Now I know why. And why I don't use that any more if I want to share information that others may or may not know about.

As for your comment, above: the method of your delivery, whether intended that way or not, does assume that I'm stupid, and, yes, that does irritate me, today, more so than on other days. I've explained why; I've apologised, since it is my issue and not something I wish to contend over. If you do not have the grace to accept my apology, nor the grace to consider that doing something about it might make it easier for me to converse with you, obviously, there's little I can do to make the situation better. I'm just asking you to meet me halfway. If you don't want to, that's fine.
(end off-topic alert)

All this talk of Scotty puts me in the mood to watch my tapes of the original series. I have a lovely set - with most of the tapes still in shrink-wrap! - of the original series. It's really cool to watch the episodes without cuts or commercial breaks. My only quibble with the set is that the episodes aren't in aired order; they're paired, ostensibly by subject, so you might get a first season episode paired with a second season episode.

I wonder if they've got the series on dvd (sure would take up a lot less space on my shelf!) and if they're in aired order?

Just for today? Really?

"irritate me" ... The feeling is mutual. (I think we can agree on that)

Like in Seinfeld: "you can't have a little grace ... you either have it or you don't" :D

Direct question, no assumptions: do you want to meet me halfway, or not?
(end of off topic alert)

Of course, now that I WANT to watch my Star Trek original series video tapes, I have no idea where they are... I have, I think, about twenty boxes labelled "videotapes" and, alas, they all seem to be on the bottom of a whole bunch of other boxes. As is usually the case.

Okay, here's a query. Name your favourite:

1. Episode with Scotty

2. Line of Scotty's

I have to confess mine, in both cases, is "The Trouble with Tribbles", with the whole post-bar fight scene where Kirk is questioning the combatants. Second place is "I know what time it is - I don't need a bloody cuckoo-clock" in the episode "Is there, in truth, no beauty?".

Oh, brother... the truth has outed. Trekkie alert! Trekkie alert! Take cover! :D

Come on you 2! Scotty is a legend! He is to Star Trek what strawberries are to cream (ask any Londoner charging you £5 for a £1 portion at Wimbledon).
TD,you are not stupid. Cheer up girl.
Yudansha, let's all get on eh? There have been enough arguments here recently.
Chins up all.
Them last 2 posts went in while i did this.
Fav Scotty ep?
Hmmm, that one where he's decking the whisky! Oh,that's a few lol.Great character. Amazing he's Canadian. His accent is good.
