Seagal´s career over?

First of all I want to say hi to all members of this great website. I come from Germany and I´ve been a fan of Steven Seagal since 1988 when his first movie "Above the Law" came out. At the beginning of his career Seagal´s martial arts ability for the screen was unbelievable. The fight scenes in "Above the Law", Hard to Kill, Marked for Death, Out for Justice, Under Siege and On deadly Ground were amazing. But after his directorial debut(Ground) he changed in every single way. He gained a lot of weight, his clothes were unusual for an Hollywood actor and the fight scenes were not as great as in his first movies.
I personally find it very disturbing to see a heavy overweight Seagal with that kind of clothes. I never ever saw an overweight action star.
Do you remember how the great Charles Bronson did look in his movie "Hard Time" in which he palyed a boxer?
Unbelievable muscular when you think that Bronson was 54 years old in 1974.
All the great martial artists such as Chuck Norris and so on have a normal figure. I don´t understand why Seagal is eating all the time...
His last good movie was "Exit Wounds" in my opinion but only because mega producer Joel Silver forced Seagal to lose weight.
His last movies were so bad I don´t find any words...
B-Movies not getting into theater´s, C-Director´s . They even dubbing his voice.
I never ever heard about that..- they dubbing his voice..-why?????????
I can´t understand that.
If "Into the Sun" doesn´t get a theatrical release then his career is over because his new movie "Submerged" is again a direct DVD release.
I always thought that Seagal is a man of honor but why does he make so many B/ C-Movies?
Just for the money?
I would say: Steven retire from the movie business and make plans to continue your music thing....
My last hope is really "Into the Sun"!!!

Welcome to the group CB.

Seagals movies have been going direct to video for some time, and unfortantly I expect that will continue to do so. But I'm sure his fans will continue to rent & buy them,so he ain't exactly "finished".
Maybe he's planning on retiring next year-why he's doing so many movies at once before hand. Maybe he figures it's time to devote to his family & music & WHATEVER he wants without having to run from place to place on a schedule.

To quote you, "I personally find it disturbing" that a brand new member comes to a fan appreciation site and the very first post is about how overweight Steven Seagal is, how bad his movies are, and that he should retire.

Interesting.

Just MY personal opinion, of course.

Oh yes--welcome to the group.

If you mean that he is finished in theatres, he probably is. But I am sure as long as his Direct to video movies turn to profit, he will keep making them. Which, I have no problem with, as long as they dont continue in the downward spiral they seem to be going. If he isnt willing to work like everyone else, he should stop making films. It is not his fault he is making DTV movies, but it is his fault they are not very good.

Don´t get me wrong folks.
I´m on this website since a long time but I wasn´t registered. I just read what the folks here write.
Now I want to write in this forum by my own.
I know that you don´t want any bad comments about Seagal here be written.
But I´m not only a fan but also a realist.
It seems to me that his time is up.
And I think you know it unless "Into the Sun" get a theatrical release.
I´m a big fan of this woman from Turkey(Susi).
She is a huge fan and I appreciate it.
But she never ever say something bad about Seagal.
He is not a messias Susi...

Rules of the forum here: you can share your opinion and we'll gladly debate you - but getting personal with other members about their opinions is not allowed.

If you can live with those rules, then welcome to the forum!

Agreed, Serena!! I get so sick and tired of all the "complaints"
about his weight I could scream!!
I have always been concerned about his health but that's only
because he works so very hard. It's almost like he's on a dead
run. No time to rest.
Also, complaints about his movies are not welcome here, at
least as far as I'm concerned. I am always ready to listen to
constructive criticism but that seldom happens here or anywhere
else as far as I have been able to determine. It's just jump in,
kick him in the teeth and then go on to someone else!! Of
course it doesn't take them long to get back to him.
We are his fans! We are "supposed" to be here to defend him against
all of the nay sayers!!
God bless,
Mama san

I don't agree

Bronson makes some valid points. Granted, we have heard them many times befores, but it is all true. Seagal being too tired is not an excuse. Millions of people go to work everyday, whether they like to or not, and many for very little money. Seagal is a celebrity who has been in the business for almost 20 years. He chooses all of his film roles, and produces them. If he is truly "sick" from making so many movies in one year, he should take a break. Unless there is a true medical condition involved, I do not feel sorry for Seagal at all. Why should we? He is no longer making decent quality movies, and even if they are halfway enjoyable, someone here has to pick out every little thing is wrong. Those "find the stunt double" games are so stupid. If anyone is that bothered by them, dont watch the movies.

I think he needs to take a break between movies. That way he will be rested up to give his all during the next movie. He is constantly on the go and I think that is catching up with him. I do believe he is either limited time or too tired to excercise. He is not old, old, but he isn't a spring chicken and weight becomes harder to lose the older you get. Although I do believe he carries his weight well. I enjoy just as much as everyone else being able to see his new movies so quickly but I think I could stand the waiting on a new movie of his if he puts his all into it. No voice dubbing, more fight scenes, no stunt doubles, atleast an hour and a half long movie, a great plot, and wonderful acting by our man. I think it would be better to wait and see a great movie than to not have to wait and see a not so good movie.

Let me start by welcoming you to the Unofficial Steven Seagal Site. I'm sure as you've probably already figured out by now we are all really big Seagal fans. If you are disturbed by Seagals weight, don't worry, nobody is forcing you to watch his movies.

I consider Steven Seagal an artist, his choice of clothing is something that differentiates/seperates himself from other actors/artists. He is very unique person with a very unique style, God bless him for that!! Last time I checked Sammo Hung is overweight and I believe he is concidered by many an action star.

You're a fan of Seagal? Do you expect to make new friend in a forum of Seagal fan's by insulting Seagal in your first post?

Why don't you give it a try. As Mama San said, constructive criticism is always welcome, I would be happy to discuss Seagals weight, his movies, his clothing style with you. Their is however a certain approach one should make when addressing Seagal fan's.

We have no evidence that Seagal is sick, his weight is really his concern, and shouldn't be anyone elses. Even though almost all of us discuss it, myself included. He does get the pick his own film roles. Do you think he was offered the part of Jason Borne in The Borne Identity?? Definatly not... I think Seagal is taking whatever movie roles he can get. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing if the movies turn out ok. He isn't being offered the big Blockbusters that he was earlier on in his career. But he is still working... I don't agree with you that his recent films are not decent quality. They are low budget films and not what we expect from Seagal. One thing I do agree with you on is "find the stunt double" and the fact that everyone picks apart his movies. Some of his recent movies that I really enjoyed, have become less favorable to me because of discussion on this board. Again, I probably even initiated some of this conversation myself, but it still tarnishes his movies for me. I think we should be greatful Seagal is still making movies, and with time I'm sure they will get better. I think all his DTV have gotten better so far, we went from Ticker, The foreigner, Out for a kill, Belly of the Beast, Out of Reach. Each movie was a better then the previous one.

"Each movie was a better then the previous one."

I don't think Belly of the Beast was any better than OFAK. Yes, directing was better, but that's it. The money was still not put to good use.

I bet a lot of people would disagree with you on that. It's all opionion/preference, but I liked each DTV more then the pervious one. OOR and BOTB are tyed for me.

I'm with you 100% on that one, Clement. :) I thought BOTB was much better than OFAK. I always said I thought OFAK had a cheaper quality to it, with not nearly as much of Seagal's presence as in BOTB. You're right, though, as we always say--just personal preference.

Of course he is not !! He is human and he has mistakes !!

Steven Seagal is a style !! Steven Seagal is an extraordinary man !! If he is like everybody he would not be important and If he was ordinary we wouldn't discuss his weight and way of his dressing isn't it ??

Steven Seagal is Steven Seagal !! THERE IS NO OTHER ONE LIKE HIM !!!! NO DOUBT !!!
I agree what he does !!!

wow... i´m pretty new to this, too, but i think you guys are right...
constructive criticism is good and it´s always good, because that´s what forums are made for, but insulting people is not an option... even if you just see that screen in front of you... there´s a human being behind every nickname and every one of them wants to be treated with respect... there shouldn´t be any problems if we stick to that!
we are all here for the same reason: our lives have -at some point- been affected by steven seagal...
wheter it is because our idea of a perfect evening is watching a movie with him or we admire his spirituality or we love his dedication to aikido... that doesn´t matter: we are fans and we should support him if he is in a bad phase of his life... and if he´s happy about his life... we should let him do his thing and be happy for him...
but maybe i should also say something to defend charles b.: in germany the seagal movies haven´t been as popular as in the states and you hear little to nothing about him... in germany he´s not featured in any magazines and most people just don´t know about all the different facettes of his life... so it´s just possible to judge him by the movies he´s doing.... (and i think that´s just a very small part of his life)
so charles b. : criticism yes, insulting people no...

sorry for jumping into this so late, but i really wanted to say that when i read it today...
