Movies Steven to star in "Shadows on the Sun".

This is from Dark Horizons.com, as quoted in Variety.com. I couldn't get the full story from Variety, though, as a subscription is needed. Hopefully other sources will have more details soon.

Bey Logan and Jimmy Moy are developing "Shadows on the Sun" as a project that will mark a radical departure from Seagal's tough-guy persona. Scripted by Logan ("The Medallion"), it will feature Seagal as a burned-out former intelligence officer who runs a medical clinic in Japan just after WWII...

Next time any of you are in Church pray for Stevie. I know its not right morally. But he needs all the help he can get. I myself do not attend. I think I am atheist who believes in one sure thing. Myself :) I still have hopes for Today You Die because of the Writer. That's it. And maybe if they filmed it in the same Prison used in Out For A Kill and In Hell. That Location rubbed off well on Van Damme and Out For A Kill take away the garbage camerawork could have been a decent action film with a basic plot.

Hell yeah Iam upset with these DTV's, honestly I have been tired of every movie he has made since Exit Wounds. Then again it doesn't have to be DTV to suck big time... I really think Half Past Dead was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I remember going into the theatre fresh off exit wounds, and watching the Seagal return crumble like all the McDonalds he must have ate to balloon up again. The opening scene is when I knew I wouldn't be seeing Seagal on the big screen again. DTV's are a whole other story, which are quite embarrasing to watch.

But Nick dont you can't compare Van Damme and Seagal, Van Dammes latest DTV's have honestly been some of the best things he has done since his old Kickboxer days. He himself in interviews had even said how crummy his movies have grown, and how he has become so much more involved in the movie making process to ensure his fans a movie they wont regret spending money on....The dude still cares about his fans, he wants his fans to appreciate his movies, he wants them to feel they spent money on a good movie. Can you honestly say anything of the above about anything Seagal has done lately. Im baffled that there is so much free love floating around the site for the guy when in my opinion his latest efforts have been nothing but a slap in the face!!! If a dvd player could project a foot when you poped in Out For A Kill a foot would litteraly come out of the thing and hit you between the legs!! Im just so upset how this guy exploits his fan base!
I typed to much as it is this stuff just really gets me worked up, maybe I should go watch Marked For Death.

I posted this a numerous amount of times so I will just state the main points. Ringo Lam's Maximum Risk required more of Van Damme as an Actor. That's when his interest in Acting truly grew past the action sequences. In 98 he impressed me with his dramatic turn in Legionnaire. And then his next two collaborations with Ringo Lam have made my blood boil. Great dramatic acting for him and impressive realistic action. Ringo Lam is the best thing to happen to him in a long time. He did make a few weak films in that time period through. Universal Soldier 2, Desert Heat, and Derailed were simply terrible. Universal Soldier 2 failed on all levels to live up to the Original. Desert Heat was suppose to have been a film in the vein of Pulp Fiction according to Van Damme. Amusing and laughable. Of course it wasn't through Pat Morita from Karate Kid was amusing. And what can I say about Derailed… Liked those model trains made me want to find my old ones and make my own movie :) I was sad to see Ringo Lam detach himself from Wake of Death but film had impressive camera work, great acting, and quite decent fights. I was hungry for more in the action department but everything else made up for it.

Everything you sad about Exit Wounds and Half Past Dead I agree with. Can't believe some members stated Ja Rule could act. I still chuckle at this.

But this comparison talk isn't very popular here. I am a bigger fan of Van Damme I believe. I won't compare their skill because real life is different. Van Damme got laid out cold with one punch by his old bodyguard and Mickey Rourkes. So real life is different from films. But he is a better Actor. But can't blame Seagal. He hasn't had as many dramatic opportunities other than Patriot.

As in there prime comparisons Seagal is my man, but as of lately he just doesn't appeal to me, he doesn't even seem like the same guy who was in ATL,MFD,US, he seems like a different actor to me. not like deniro goodfellas to meet the parents good, i mean bad different.

Absolutely. Especially after I rented Submerged. I rented it when I came home for a while, and even my mom said that was some of the worst acting ever. I hate to see him sink so low, but that's sort of out of my reach. Maybe a change of scenery like "Shadows" could change his fortunes a bit, but I won't hold my breath about it.

Probably. The little evidence we've heard points to yes.

That sucks though. Would've liked to see Steven in a 1940s piece. Now it's just another action movie.

I agree Blue, I too would have liked to see him in something a little different like that- could be pretty cool, but this movie doesnt sound that bad to its sort of vague- but atleast it could be a good setup movie about spys and traitors and what not. Who Knows it could change back ya never know with his ups and downs.

I was thinking if people want him to be in something different but still got action and so on in it..Why not an ganster one, like an re-make of The Untouchables?...He would make an real cool Eliott Ness...but thats just my thinking...

I agree with you mate. Considering Van Damme's age, he has kept himself in amazing shape. A lot of people didn't rate Maximum Risk but I kinda liked the European flavour of the movie and thought Van Damme stretched himself as an actor, turning in his best dramatic performance ever. OK, so he struggles somewhat in the acting department and his fight sequences lack the creativity of Jackie Chan's or Jet Li's, but he works hard in his movies and at least he actually does all his own fight sequences. I watched and loved pretty much all of his movies right up to the abysmal Street Fighter, a film so laughably awful, it could have proved a fatal blow to his career. Although his later movies have lacked the flair and brutality of his earlier films, he has grown as an actor and continues to make hard hitting action movies which give the fans exactly what they want. Maximum Risk, Knock Off and Double Team are great movies and I count them amongst his best work. I have yet to see In Hell or Wake Of Death - are they any good?

In Hell is a great guy-in-prison drama, less karate (martial arts) fighting, more drama, sadness, philosophy and fist fights. It's very good and very different from ANYTHING Van Damme has EVER made... A friend of mine was stunned by this movie because he had not expected Van Damme to make such a movie. It's very similar to The Shawshank Redemption with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.

Wake of Death is a great action-drama. Van Damme acts this one out of the park. He is really believable and into character. The directing is ok, above average as are the special effects. The fighting scenes are a little different that the ones from his older movies as they are shorter and a little bit more brutal and to-the-point. There is one scene, a motorcycle chase scene that could have been better EDITED and DIRECTED, but otherwise this is one movie that should have gone to cinemas, it is THAT good. It's a lot better than movies like Transporter 2 (although I loved The Transporter, the first one), The Punisher (the new one, not the one with Dolph Lundgren), etc. Wake of Death is similar to Man on Fire the movie with Denzel Washington in terms of atmosphere and story and to Hard Target if you want a comparison to one of JCVD's older movies.

I say see them both as they are great, great action movies. No one can say that they are not above average.

Also check out The Replicant, another pretty good JCVD movie in which he acts very well..
