Where's TD?

Sorry, Amos; it is a great site, I think I'm just not ready to view it yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to explain to my friend how and why the model is gone.

And I don't know if I'll be able to find another model still in the box without paying a small fortune for it, either.

Sigh.

I'll keep the link for viewing later, though, Amos.

-TD, with apologies for misunderstanding

Thanks, Purple. I just wish I had the time to unpack. This living in a jumble is making me crazy.

Moving in issues aside (oh, that horrible paint job - no wonder I'm having trouble sleeping)...

BB King concert last night!

I really enjoyed myself - though today I'm utterly exhausted. (I think I'm getting too old for this sort of thing.)

I spent a few hours at the Ex (Canadian National Exhibition) being a kid again and trying some rides. The Ex isn't what it was, though - many of my favourite rides are gone, and the ones that are there just don't do it for me. The only roller coaster that's left is the Wild Cat, the Flyer having been torn down because it was getting too old, and the other one they had was also absent; other favourite rides, the Monster and Tidal Wave are both gone, as is the one that used to spin from the horizontal to the vertical (Tilt-a-Whirl? though its replacement looked interesting...). And though the Doggy Doggy guy is dead and gone, his voice lives on... (those who have been to the Ex will know what I'm talking about).

I didn't have enough time or money, but I did want to take the short (3 1/2 minutes) trip on the helicopter. Flying terrifies me and helicopters terrify me even more, which is why I wanted to do it. Nothing like doing what scares you to get over it....

Anyway, afterwards I made my way towards Ontario Place. The concert started at 5:30 (the venue has a 10:30 curfew, which is why the concert started so early). I hadn't been to the Molson Amphitheatre before. It used to be The Forum, an open air venue "in the round" where everyone could see and hear everything without being blown away by the sound. Now it's partly open air, but just a typical stage, and what they have to do to the sound to make the people 'way in the back hear...

I had a seat down in front. Buying tickets on the web without having been to the venue beforehand turned out to be unfortunate - I was sitting right in front of one of the speakers! Still, I had a good view of the stage (until the two tall guys sat down in front of me - I swear, I'm under a curse! :D) and could see the performers perform.

Now, I'm not au courant with any of these performers, so forgive me if I get stuff wrong. This was all new to me, and I had to keep asking questions of the lads sitting next to me, who were good enough to explain stuff as the concert went on.

First up was the Muddy Waters band (I gather Muddy Waters himself has shuffled off this mortal coil). I really enjoyed their music. It struck me that for these guys, the venue didn't matter - a big place like this, or a smoky bar with fifty people in it - it was all about the music. Excellent. They're on my list to get their recordings.

Next was Elvin Bishop. Again, like the Muddy Waters band, it was all about the music. Bishop was a character, though - at one point, he left the stage (his guitar had definitely seen better days, btw - battered, pock-marked, and obviously much loved), came down to the audience in the orchestra circle (my level), sat on a woman's lap, and then snagged an audience member - a young pretty girl, of course! - brought her up to the stage, did some hip bumps with her and then had her strum his guitar while he fingered! It was a lot of fun, and she was a good sport (and he gave her his pick afterwards).

Next was a female vocalist, a newcomer, apparently much awarded, I think her name was Shereena Cobeden (but the sound was so loud I couldn't hear her name - that's just what it sounded like, to me, so apologies for getting it wrong.)

Anyway, with her it was like switch had suddenly turned off. I couldn't get any enjoyment out of her performance at all, and she had twice as many songs as the previous two bands combined. The guys sitting next to me scolded me for being critical, saying it was my fault and not hers for not liking her; that it was the sound technician's fault. Interestingly, though, when it came right down to it, these two guys themselves couldn't remember the title of a single song she sang. So I don't think it was just me, or the sound technician deciding to take a coffee break right at that particular moment....

Certainly something was wrong somewhere - she and the musicians seemed to be competing for supremacy in the sound department. And to me, she was making the mistake a lot of new, inexperienced artists make, thinking volume and over-embellishing the elements in the music makes one sound better. What I was getting during her performance was that it was ALL about the performance and not about the music. I guess I just get turned off by singers flapping their arms like they were pumping a bag pipe and bellowing like a bull in heat. I think I should have taken a dinner break right then....

Anyway, next up was Dr. John. Now here, we were getting away from the small, intimate feel of the first two bands and getting something more stagy. But the staginess didn't matter. Dr. John was a character, you bet, but his music was good. Different, not as much to my taste as the first two, more the jazz end the blues spectrum, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I visualised him as an old fart who didn't care what people thought, he was just doing his thing, and that's what made it so enjoyable overall. (I didn't know this, 'til one of my seatmates told me, but Dr. John is the one who did the music for the Garfield (cartoon cat) holiday specials. I thought he sounded familiar....).

Then, of course, was B.B. King himself.

First his band did a couple of warm-up pieces. The first one was clearly boogie-woogie style, and a lot of fun, the second was blues. They also had this Temptations dance thing going whenever it was their turn to play, coming up to the mike in step and then backing up... fun to watch.

B.B. King - I guess the only way to put it, is that he was just an adorable, cute old guy who was just there to enjoy himself, and invited you along for the ride. There was one song he was completely mugging his way through and had the audience practically on the floor from laughter. Lots of audience participation which was a lot of fun (I'd lost my voice my this time, so the lads around me were stunt-dubbing for me). A open spot on the floor of the orchestra circle turned into a dance floor briefly, I thought that was great and enjoyed watching.

He even joked about the 10:30 curfew. (Everything was timed down to the minute, and he was off the stage at precisely 10:29).

He finished by throwing out handfuls of picks, and for the ladies, a couple of gold chains.

I had a great time, overall (despite the lads on either side of me getting totally wasted because, after all, this was the MOLSON amphitheatre and the pints were plentiful). I have to say, it was the most fun I'd had, well, ever!

-TD, exhausted but happy to have gone

Good for you, TD! Sounds like a great concert and an all-around terrific evening! Glad to hear you had such a good time--maybe not as good as the two wasted guys next to you, but at least you remember it today. ;) :D

Well you got out of that hole of a neighbourhood at last:D.
I hope you settle in now. No slapping the neighbours if they play loud music now.;)
I was going to put in a pic of the Enterprise but maybe not eh?

You are risking serious personal injury if you do so... ;) Actually, I was fortunate to find a 25th anniversary re-issue edition of the model, purchased for the princely sum of $10 U.S. (I was willing to pay up to $50, but the bidding never got that far).

This one, however, is staying in the shrink-wrap, since my friend who does models has been forbidden from doing any more by his doctor. (Something about breathing in all that solvent....;) )

Yes, this new place is splendid! I actually have a hard time working at home now because I just want to sit and enjoy the place! I love my balcony, and the fact that even on hot days it doesn't get very hot because of all the windows, and even after that short time when the sun is coming in the west window, once the sun dips behind the tall office buildings, about half an hour later the place is cool again.

Next item on the agenda: getting that sofa! (That footstool is awfully hard to sit on, and detrimental to tv watching enjoyment!)

I always love seeing B.B. King live (I was fortunate to see him 2 times)!
There you can sit and really feel the atomosphere, the smell of
the Mississippi River, the food, and most importantly the blues.... :)

Remebered it - and oh, my poor, aching muscles! It's hard work sitting for five hours! :D (actually, it is!)

Also, I think all those rides sprung something somewhere.... ow. :D

Well, and it because it was an open-air venue (where, technically, there was still "no smoking"!) after dark, there was a distinctly weedy odour wafting along the gentle breeze (read: howling windstorm) that whistled through the stands.

One of the lads had managed to sneak in a digital camera and almost got away with taking photos but a security guard spotted him. Only gave him a warning; though how he got it through security (they were practically strip searching everyone on the way in - I hate people rummaging through my purse) I do not know.

I'm never going back to the doctor again. Every time I go, it just gets worse and worse.

Last year - well, you all may as well know, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. Supposed to control this with diet (and lose weight, too). Diet they gave me made me gain back all the weight I'd lost between diagnosis and attending the diabetic information seminar - plus extra.

This year, apparently my cholesterol is high enough the doctor wants to put me on medication. Also, dire warnings if I don't lose weight I'll be up to full-blown diabetes in 3 years.

However, if I stick to the diet the diabetic dietitian gave me, I'll just keep gaining weight, which is contrary to the effect it's supposed to have.

I've been struggling with the diabetes diagnosis for a year because it just doesn't seem right to me. I tend to experience severe drops in blood sugar where I get cold and clammy and near to fainting, hence why I end up noshing most of the day - so I don't fall down. And yet, my blood tests always show my levels to be on the high side of normal - which is, in fact, normal for me.

However, the diet the diabetic dietition gave me is so full of carbohydrates - especially starch carbs - it's having the opposite effect to what it's supposed to be doing. I'm not losing weight on the diet - I'm gaining it, spectacularly. Not to mention the quantity of starch carbs I'm required to consume - consuming starch carbs tends to make me very tired, rather than alert. So something's not right there, either.

The cholesterol issue is puzzling, too, because I rarely eat anything high in fat, like McDonald's. I never cook anything in oil, and my protein is usually limited to the usual "pack of cards" size.

I'm debating going for a second opinion, mostly because I can't afford the cholesterol medicine ($200 for three months). However, going for a second opinion is also going to cost me since the provincial government restricted the number of times a person can get a full physical to once in a 12-month period. So I can't get a second opinion unless I pay for it myself.

I'm too stressed to think clearly about what my next step is.

I think I'll go pop in a Steven film just to get some vicarious ass-kicking in to relieve the stress.

Yeah doesn't it seem that drs sometimes seem to make more medical problems for the person so then they have to come back for more medical care :)

Just like the auto shop!

It does seem that way, doesn't it? It's irritating, that's for sure. I'm mostly annoyed because the doctor immediately wrote out the prescription without even discussing alternatives. I've heard that the anti-cholesterol medication can be pretty toxic, and I have a philosophical objection to taking medication anyway. (Just because it's available doesn't mean one has to take it.)

Not to mention the fact that I simply cannot afford $200 for medication.

(sigh)

Looks like I've got some researching to do.

Thanks, Amos.

I'm just really concerned about taking Lipitor. Once you start taking it you pretty much have to take it for the rest of your life, and I'm not prepared to pay $75 a month for medication that will irreversibly alter my body chemistry and actively prevent me from being healed through more natural means.

-TD, still annoyed

You do right. I have no idea what effect all these drugs they put in me do to your body but they were necessary. I mean i did not want to be awake!
Glad to see you are settling in TD:D.
Ps. Want that Enterprise pic yet? Heh.

Settling in, he sez. Take a peek at the piccie below. That's pretty much how my place still is, 3 months after moving in. And in case you're wondering, yes, those walls are pink. They started off that horrible dark dusty rose pink; then the person who moved out slapped on one coat of primer, which resulted in the walls being somewhat less pink, but gives the effect of spilt milk.

I've put on two more coats of primer and that hideous pink is STILL visible, except in those places where I used a brush instead of roller.

I bought the Enterprise bridge model (reissue, not the original) but I haven't had the heart to open the box and start working on it, mostly because my friend who helped me with the original model hasn't ceased rubbing it in about the accidental disposal.

I have nice friends (not).

I am so bummed out about everything I am fleeing the city tomorrow and going up to the cottage for the weekend. I have just enough in the bank to cover the trip. A weekend isn't long enough, but it'll have to do. Besides, it'll give me a chance to go to the cemetery, where my mother is buried, which is mainly why I go. Driving up in traffic, though... I can feel my nerves starting to jangle even now! (I like driving. I don't like traffic. Only open roads, for me!)
