LOL nice video. Sharp eyes, TD. Didn't you wonder also why the voice kept breaking off every few seconds or so? :D

I'm in the business, so to speak, of photo fakery, and I've certainly seen enough examples of photo and digital fakery that to catch this one was as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.

Everyone's so hepped up and excited about this, though, I may as well be talking to myself. Ah, well. It's not like THAT hasn't happened before!

TD what do you mean you are in the business of photo fakery so to speak? And if you don't mind maybe you can fill us in on some pointers to look for. PL

I do newsletters and other graphic design work. I take photos and images all the time and do unspeakable things to them. Mind you, my version of Photoshop is admittedly elderly, so my options are limited, but I've been taking courses in the most current version, and I can assure you, that photo fakery has achieved new heights.

The first clue in the photograph was the proportions. The monks are out of proportion to Steven - whoever did the photo had to insert Steven between the two monks in such a way that it didn't look like he was pasted over top of them.

The second clue was the very faint, almost one pixel-width of clipping path around Steven. The monks don't have it - therefore the photo of Steven was inserted.

In the video, again it's the proportions, the shadows, the timing of the monks' bows and his, and the distressing non-synchronization of mouth movements with the voice over and the peculiarly static nature of Steven's position between the monks. Steven was filmed, probably with a regular 5 megapixal digital camera, and he was speaking at the time - his chracteristic tics are present, but it was done separately from the monks, and then the two were composited together. If I could get a better close-up of the actual video you'd probably see that same one-pixel clipping path around Steven before he was dropped into the tableau.

These days, a picture is worth a lot less than a thousand words - because it's getting easier to fake photos. I've done it myself, to one of Steven's photos - you would never know there had been anyone standing next to him. And that was when I was just learning.

I'm annoyed that the organization, if they are indeed legitimate, would use an obviously faked image, claim it as real (probably with the consent of Steven's "people") and use it to promote their cause. Why did they need to do that? All they had to do was put Steven's image up with his message - why the fakery? That's what troubles me more than anything else.

I hope Seagal is in good enough shape to do a long walk the way his physical health is deteriating.
The walk would probably do him good. However, I doubt he'll walk more than a kilometre or two, for the publicity. No worries on that score.

-TD, aka Cassandra, that is a very nice name!!
Cassandra, in Greek legend, was a soothsayer whose soothsayings were cursed - they were never believed, until they actually came true, usually to the detriment of those seeking sooth, so to speak.

Time will tell if I am that Cassandra, or merely an old grouch. :D :D (I seem to recall that after seeing the trailer for OFAK, I predicted it would be a fairly awful movie. No one believed me. Then OFAK came out....)

-TD, realising suddenly she's posted 3 messages in a row and is likely in serious trouble now

Called ‘Hope for Humanity Peace Walk,’ they will be doing another walk from San Francisco to Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16th to August 9th in commemoration of the 60th year of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and also for the 60th year since the first Atomic test – Trinity exploded on Indigenous land in Alamogordo.

Footprints for Peace is a grassroots organization that co-ordinates and assists others in organizing peace pilgrimages. Footprints for Peace offers an opportunity for all people to come together in a non-violent, spiritually motivated series of actions through running and walking. The pilgrimages seek to raise awareness of the suffering and harassment that communities through out the world face by the ongoing destruction caused by the nuclear industry. These pilgrimages are an opportunity to interact with local communities and create dialogue with the public as a way to bring an end to the threat of nuclear weapons.

The pilgrimage, in conjunction with the Global Nuclear Disarmament Fund aims to call attention to the current state of nuclear weapons, the threat of nuclear terrorism and to raise awareness that an atomic detonation on any civilian population is unthinkable. The Global Nuclear Disarmament Fund (GNDF) is a gathering of Nobel Prize winning NGO’s, Nuclear Weapons Specialists and Music Marketers that have set into motion the world’s first private fund aimed at destroying Nuclear Bombs. Please visit their website at www.GNDFund.org

On July 16 2005 Zen Monks will bring the “Atomic Flame” from Hiroshima to San Francisco were they will be joined by Indigenous People, Veterans and peace groups of all faiths to begin their 1600 mile journey by foot across the desert, over mountain ranges and through more than 200 communities back to the site of the first Atomic Bomb Test Site in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Once returned to its origin, the “Atomic Flame” that has been kept for 60 years will be extinguished during a global television broadcast calling for an end to the threat and fear of nuclear weapons. The walk wishes to return this “Atomic Flame” to its origins in memory of those who have lost their lives and to the survivors who have been affected by the deadly effects of the nuclear industry.

In the words of Mr. Iccho Itoh, Mayor of Nagasaki who said on August 9 2004 that “Many of those who only narrowly escaped death were afflicted by the after-effects of the bombing, and continue to suffer today. I say this to ensure that every body understands that, even 59 years later, nuclear weapons continue to inflict tragic suffering. We continue to voice our appeal to the world that the citizens of Nagasaki may be the last victims of nuclear warfare.” This is a spiritual event and will be drug and alcohol free

I have a feeling this is going to be hard to catch on TV for everyone, Heather. :indiffere I have 60 channels on my cable, and I'm not going to sit there and scan each one all day. :D I just hope it's listed in the local paper, or on the local cable guide the day before--if it's even going to be picked up.
