Called ‘Hope for Humanity Peace Walk,’ they will be doing another walk from San Francisco to Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16th to August 9th in commemoration of the 60th year of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and also for the 60th year since the first Atomic test – Trinity exploded on Indigenous land in Alamogordo.
Footprints for Peace is a grassroots organization that co-ordinates and assists others in organizing peace pilgrimages. Footprints for Peace offers an opportunity for all people to come together in a non-violent, spiritually motivated series of actions through running and walking. The pilgrimages seek to raise awareness of the suffering and harassment that communities through out the world face by the ongoing destruction caused by the nuclear industry. These pilgrimages are an opportunity to interact with local communities and create dialogue with the public as a way to bring an end to the threat of nuclear weapons.
The pilgrimage, in conjunction with the Global Nuclear Disarmament Fund aims to call attention to the current state of nuclear weapons, the threat of nuclear terrorism and to raise awareness that an atomic detonation on any civilian population is unthinkable. The Global Nuclear Disarmament Fund (GNDF) is a gathering of Nobel Prize winning NGO’s, Nuclear Weapons Specialists and Music Marketers that have set into motion the world’s first private fund aimed at destroying Nuclear Bombs. Please visit their website at

On July 16 2005 Zen Monks will bring the “Atomic Flame” from Hiroshima to San Francisco were they will be joined by Indigenous People, Veterans and peace groups of all faiths to begin their 1600 mile journey by foot across the desert, over mountain ranges and through more than 200 communities back to the site of the first Atomic Bomb Test Site in Alamogordo, New Mexico. Once returned to its origin, the “Atomic Flame” that has been kept for 60 years will be extinguished during a global television broadcast calling for an end to the threat and fear of nuclear weapons. The walk wishes to return this “Atomic Flame” to its origins in memory of those who have lost their lives and to the survivors who have been affected by the deadly effects of the nuclear industry.
In the words of Mr. Iccho Itoh, Mayor of Nagasaki who said on August 9 2004 that “Many of those who only narrowly escaped death were afflicted by the after-effects of the bombing, and continue to suffer today. I say this to ensure that every body understands that, even 59 years later, nuclear weapons continue to inflict tragic suffering. We continue to voice our appeal to the world that the citizens of Nagasaki may be the last victims of nuclear warfare.” This is a spiritual event and will be drug and alcohol free
