Bad News: Poor Rental Sales for OOR

Looks like "Out of Reach" wasn't as succesful as we all thought. According to IMDB's list of the top Rentals in America for the week
July 18th- July 25th, "OOR" did not even enter in the TOP 50 sales in America. In comparison, "Belly of the Beast" maintained 7th place on the charts in it's first week, and slowly dropped to 34th and 48th before finally dropping off completely.

I don't know if this is because purchasing sales were higher this time so less people rented it, or it was released at a competetive period. Either way, that is not good to have such a drastic difference between his last two films.

I'd hazard a guess and say people are finally starting to catch on - Steven's dtv movies are not good, and with the dubbing and doubles problem, no longer watchable for the reasons people watch Steven Seagal movies.

Either that, or more people bought then rented, which I guess is good, but a happy medium is nice. I agree TD, Seagal needs to step up to the plate and start putting some effort into his films. This is proof that if Seagal keeps it up, he could risk losing it all.

Thanks for that report, Reservoir Dog. Good point about the possibility of higher sales, as we saw on Amazon the sales ranking was doing remarkably well for quite a while, even supposedly breaking a record for a short period of time. Interesting, though, that IMDB is apparently the only site on the internet with those figures so far for the past week. All the other sites only have them from the week before that, except Billboard, which only lists the top 10.

Thats horrible! Heck,Van Damme last movie In Hell lasted around 3 months in the top 50, and OOR couldnt even break the list. Remember when Seagal movies made more than Van Damme movies?

NOTE TO SEAGAL: Make a quality film...PLEASE!

All OOR did was break the 1000 sales rank, the guy who posted that thought it was good or something, which is really wasnt. When new movies come out they usually break 100 on the Amazon sales rank the first day.

This movie is doing pretty bad so far. Hopefully it can break the top 50 (rentals) next week.

Interesting breakdown. So new movies usually break 100, eh? When you say new movies, does that include the straight-to-DVD movies also? I would think that would make a huge difference, and probably be in a completely different category. For example, The Foreigner last year was the top-selling video for the first half of the year, but only for straight-to-DVD movies.

Thanks for the info. :)

I think most people do buy DVD's...Renting is $4.00 after all...I hope the rental numbers will improve though...I think the biggest problem is lack of promotion, really and truly...Unless someone is in the video store and sees it how are they going to know...
It's a shame we don't see TV ads, Why, why, why? But anyway, I know I'm glad to have it...I rent and bought it, and I do it again, too...

I doubt all DTV movies do, but I know Van Damme and Seagal spend atleast one moment at 100 every time a movie comes out. Breaking 1000 isnt anything to be excited about. That number will bounce drastically every time 1 copy is bought.

I really think IMDB made a mistake, I dont beleive for one second OOR didnt make at least 300 K. Heck Lundgren opened with 750 K with Detention. Van Damme opened with nearly 6 million for In Hell and Belly of the Beast opened with 4 million something (if my memory serves me correct). All those movies had no advertising so you would think OOR would make the list.

Thanks for that info! I really didn't know for sure. And you're quite possibly right about IMDB making a mistake. Everyone here is forever warning how inaccurate that site is. :D

Thanks again for taking the time to explain. :)

I know a lot of video stores here are only ordering three to five copies which isn't very good. I guess all the negative word of mouth on OOR has killed it everywhere.

Out of Reach

Well The Foreigner probably did well only because Seagal still had a good following, once people got it home they probably all discovered it wasn't very good. These appalling Oblowitz films will take their toll eventually, all non-Seagal fans who saw them will be instantly put off him and this will have consequences for his films to follow. Oblowitz is damaging Seagal's reputation with his disgracefully bad film-making, if he is allowed to make more with him he may destroy Seagal's image completely. That aside, I'd say Columbia/Tristar's nothing publicity for Out of Reach wouldn't have done it any favours either. I didn't see any trailers on any videos, and only saw the online one a few days before it was released. With no publicity, a video release is usually doomed to failure. Thanks Columbia.

I go to the video stores a lot, and the last few movies that Steven did, there were only 10 copies. They are always sold out for the first 2 weeks. After that you can have your choice of DVD or VHS. I bought mine so I would not have to worry about that.

I like to think the same way as you Serena :D Perhaps this movie will be in the top 10 DVD purchased DVD's for that particular week. Time will tell how this movie does, but apparently all his DTV movies turn over a profit as they are sold to the USA Network for about the same price the movie cost to make. Any other rentals and sales are just money in Franchise's pocket! ;)

That's what I like to see! :D A little optimism. And good point about USA Network! As long as there's a profit to be made somewhere--whether through DVD sales or rentals or selling to USA Network--then hopefully he'll be able to keep making movies. It's only been a week, after all. And since there's been no publicity or promotin at all, most people won't even be aware it's out until they keep returning to their video stores. After all, most people haven't been hanging around this site anticipating the movie for months, eh? ;) :D

The USA Network might buy "Out of Reach", but if sales continue to decline, they will realize the audience is not as interested as they were in the past for others like BOTB. It is all about ratings, and if OOR is really doing that poor, USA network might buy it, but they can negotiate to pay a lot less, so that Franchise or Columbia can sell it off quickly.

I think a whole lot of people watch his movies on USA Network, as we saw in an article somewhere here a few months ago about how high the ratings are when his movies are on. Which will give him even more exposure for his next movie. :) See? Can't shake an optimist. ;) Damned annoying people will always find that silver lining. :D

Hehe. No, it is good to be optimistic. but "Sweetchinmusic" really got me worried. I had no idea it was THAT terrible, but now that I think about it, rental sales must have been less than a few $100,000 otherwise it would have made the list.
