Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Ah!

I have returned from a few months in the wilderness.

I must say, my hopes were not high for Belly Of The Beast and so I wasn't too disappointed when I bought it only to find that it actually wasn't very good. Again - it's the all too common problem of a stunt double overload. The bit at the beginning where he does the Aikido roll through the window and it is obviously him doing the move was promising and I thought that I might actually see some good stuff now... but it was obviously too strenuous for him because then when his character jumps and lands in a kind of crouched position and you just see the lower half of his body and his torso and a pair of bare, sweaty but very muscular and toned forearms but no face made me worry. It so obviously wasn't Steven Seagal. And then the fight in the fruit market complete with jumping kicks? When has Seagal ever performed a jumping kick in his life? All the crazy martial arts scenes with the mad moves and the lightning fast sweeps and kicks were not performed by Steven Seagal but by a stunt double. I used to watch Seagal movies and know that it was actually Seagal performing all of the martial arts moves, and that provided a certain level of excitement. Now, it is as if all of the soul has been taken out of his martial arts moves and replaced with the ten a penny moves of any one of countless doubtless highly skilled martial artists who do all of his moves for him. It all looks very nice, but knowing that it isn't Seagal performing the moves leaves a somewhat sour taste. It's like opening a can of Coca Cola and finding that it is actually Pepsi. It's not the same and it's certainly not as good.

Anyway - hope everyone is well.

Thanks guys. Hope you've all missed me. I fled the nest back around Christmas and moved in with my girlfriend. Unfortunately we don't have a net connection yet, but I'm working on it. I've just got myself a laptop, so hopefully will be getting a net connection within the next month or so. Then I'll be back for good.

This may be the worst comment a new addition to the forum family could make but I was just wondering how many other Steven Seagal fans out there passed up on buying Out For A Kill and The Foreigner because the overall movie was not up to par and didn't quite seem to honor The Man (Seagal) correctly? I did think that Belly Of the Beast was a great new movie though and if anyone out there has not seen it you should.

Hi, ZenLateralus. Welcome to the site! :)

I also liked Belly of the Beast. And Out for a Kill was my "least favorite" :D of all his movies. I thought the Foreigner was okay. I did buy each of them, as I have his other movies. It's really the only way, besides this site, of showing our support to him. Besides, if his movies don't garner enough sales, there may not be enough money put out to make the next one!

Enjoy yourself here, ZenLateralus. :) Hope to see more posts from you in the future.

Welcome ZenLateralus, have a good time here with all of us.
I did like BOTB, but OFAK and TF were not as good. I did buy the DVD's just so I could watch them whenever I want.
I just hope that the next movie is in the theater.

Welcome Zen,

I bought them all and enjoy them all, I do like BOTB better than the others, though...
I have watched it many, many times....:) I will support his films no matter what, because to me they all offer something...The swordwork in OFAK, and I believe very little use of stunt doubles, and In TF it was his very awesome shooting...:)

I collect all his films. I haven't seen or purchased the last two yet. Is it because of the fallout he had with Nasso that he doesn't put films in the theater anymore? I like watching his films on the big theater screens.:)
