Belly Of The Beast

This is Steven Seagal's latest motion picture. This movie is released on region 1 dvd on 31st December 2003 and region 2 dvd on 16th February 2003. This thread contains important information on the release.

Budget: $14 million

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Plot: Ex-CIA Agent JAKE HOPPER has run a successful private security business since leaving the agency when his wife died, leaving him alone with daughter, JESSICA.

While hiking in Thailand, Jessica and her friend SARAH are kidnapped by an organization that calls itself the ABU KARAF. Sarah is a US Senator's daughter. For ransom the Abu Karaf demand the release of 20 prisoners from American custody. The US Secretary of State urges restraint - he won't negotiate. An ex-colleague of Jake's recognizes Jessica on the ransom tape and tips him off. Jake knows he must rescue the girls himself.

An old CIA buddy puts Jake in contact with 'LEON WASHINGTON' an active CIA agent working in Thailand. Jake goes to Bangkok and escapes an assassination attempt by unknown forces. Leon arranges a meeting with SOKU Ð the internal security chief for JANTAPAN. Jantapan is an eccentric and scary character, a rebel military general that is making a play to be one of the most powerful men in Thailand. Secretly Jantapan is messing with some dangerous spiritual forces.

Soku provides Jake with a cover story, but the CIA wants Jake out of it - they are planning to take out the Abu Karaf with the aid of the Thai army and don't want a civilian in the middle.

Jake is a spiritual man so he contacts his spiritual master PAITOON. As Jake is in trouble, Paitoon offers to arrange a divination from the oracle of the order.

Jake enlists the help of his old friend and partner SUNTI. Together they con LULU, the girlfriend of WU an arms dealer, to steal information leading to the Abu Karaf. Jake & Sunti follow the leads to a warehouse where they discover evidence of highly sophisticated weaponry. With the dangerous drug dealer Wu now after Lulu, Jake takes her under his wing.

Jake shares some of his info with Leon - still testing the waters. Can he trust the CIA agent? Another attempt is made on Jake's life - this time Jake is sure that Leon was involved. Finally, the Abu Karaf contact Jake to arrange a meeting - the pieces are coming together.

Jake gets his reading from the old oracle. The cryptic message confirm his fears - evil and demonic spiritual forces are working against him. Jantapan tries to send the spirit of an ancient warrior demon to kill Jake but the ceremony goes wrong and the spirit enters Jantapan himself giving him amazing physical and spiritual powers.

Jake and Sunti go to meet the leader of the Abu Karaf SUNGRIT - he confirms what Jake suspects - since 9/11 Jantapan has worked to corner the narcotics and arms market. It was Jantapan who kidnapped the girls, blaming the Abu Karaf so the army would wipe out his competition. Sungrit knows where the girls are and gives Jake plans and intelligence. They both need the girls alive. With more betrayal and action on the horizon, Jake must engage in a battle that will put both his physical and spiritual powers to the ultimate test as he takes on the demon Jantapan in a wild battle that can only end in death.

Fighting

Well, though I must say I love seeing Seagal being true to his ways by doing normal-speed Aikido fights, I thought the fight scenes in Belly of the Beast were top drawer and considering how strenuous and elaborate the moves were I think he did quite a lot of the fighting himself, much more so here than in his last few films. The fruit market is my favourite, followed by the climax, the swordfight, the transvestite, the police station and the club. I also love that excellent shootout halfway through.

Except he did almost none of the fighting in the film, Steve, except in the police station scene. It was all stunt doubles, unfortunately, which is why overall BOTB was so disappointing.

"outspoken girl at all...
And unfortunately I can't take those being harsh with me...
Perhaps that is the biggest reason why I am not that way with others...
I know how I would feel if the shoe was on my foot...
I'd never be a bitching and complaining one with him, even if I was his girl,
I see women who do that and I think it's disgusting...
They treat their husbands like a dog, there is no respect, and I tell myself that they as a couple won't last..."
Good sentiments.Well done.That's it.

Sorry to anyone who didn't like it but I don't agree, I think Belly of the Beast is an excellent film and he did more of the fighting in it than some people here are letting on. Compared to Sly Stallone who now makes nothing but garbage, Arnie who's gone into politics and Dolph Lundgren and Chuck Norris who don't seem to make decent films anymore I think we should all be proud The Master is still going strong in action films and making great ones like Belly of the Beast. He's always used stunt doubles every now and then, all the decent action heroes do. Marked for Death was one of his best films and still has some stunt doubles in the final fight much more obvious than anything in Belly.

Thanks for agreeing guys, nice to know I'm not the only one who thought it was a great film! It's a pity it didn't hit theatres as I feel it would have gone down much better than Half Past Dead did. It also felt like a good old action eighties film with the two heroes in their assault on the bad guy's base at the end. It will be worth the wait Heather I promise, it even has a meat cleaver scene in it which almost rivals the one in Out for Justice! You might have to squint your eyes for that bit ;-).

Hi Steve...
I should gently point out that I was not agreeing simply to agree, I really and truly was so pleased with that film...
It was most enjoyable for me...
You're right, it should have went to the big screen, I think it would have done very well by word of mouth...
I would of coruse recommend it to anyone who wants a very good time,
and some beautiful scenery and culture...
The meat cleaver scene makes me cringe too, usually I have to look away...

Belly of the Beast is one of the best steven seagal direct to video films! The time for the action revenge films from the 80´s and 90¨s are all over. Everybody knows that´s seagal and van damme needs to make diffrent kinds of action films to make it to the Big screen.

But in all " Belly of the Beast is a comeback for steven after rather bad fighting quality films in recent years.

ok, well I agree, the isn't much fighting in The Foriegner, but I wouldn't say that the fighting is bad, there just isn't enough of it...But his shooting, now that was great, he was the strong silent type, nothing wrong with that...Silent and deadly...He was an awesome fighter in OFAK in my book, I really like the swordwork....And the kicks, oh my...BOTB was fabulous, I have no complaints, but then when did I ever complain about Sensei? To me, Belly was very satisfiying and very good, I will watch again, soon...Steven has a lot to offer and does if people look at his efforts in the right way...:) He never would have become what he has without working very hard...:)

Ah!

I have returned from a few months in the wilderness.

I must say, my hopes were not high for Belly Of The Beast and so I wasn't too disappointed when I bought it only to find that it actually wasn't very good. Again - it's the all too common problem of a stunt double overload. The bit at the beginning where he does the Aikido roll through the window and it is obviously him doing the move was promising and I thought that I might actually see some good stuff now... but it was obviously too strenuous for him because then when his character jumps and lands in a kind of crouched position and you just see the lower half of his body and his torso and a pair of bare, sweaty but very muscular and toned forearms but no face made me worry. It so obviously wasn't Steven Seagal. And then the fight in the fruit market complete with jumping kicks? When has Seagal ever performed a jumping kick in his life? All the crazy martial arts scenes with the mad moves and the lightning fast sweeps and kicks were not performed by Steven Seagal but by a stunt double. I used to watch Seagal movies and know that it was actually Seagal performing all of the martial arts moves, and that provided a certain level of excitement. Now, it is as if all of the soul has been taken out of his martial arts moves and replaced with the ten a penny moves of any one of countless doubtless highly skilled martial artists who do all of his moves for him. It all looks very nice, but knowing that it isn't Seagal performing the moves leaves a somewhat sour taste. It's like opening a can of Coca Cola and finding that it is actually Pepsi. It's not the same and it's certainly not as good.

Anyway - hope everyone is well.

I think Seagal's movies have been improving, if you take Ticker and Belly, it's certainly a great improvement for me, maybe OFR can be better..let's wait.

Welcome back Glimmer !!

Welcome back, GlimmerMan, I was wondering where you had gone!
I, like you, can tell when it's a stunt double and when it isn't...
Believe it or not, Steven is so much more pleasing just standing around
then those other guys with all their fancy moves...
The guy with the er, gross forearms was obviously not him...
No comparison....
Plus, his fighting is sooooooo natural...
Good to see you back...:)
