That's a really kind offer Martin. You have got the measure of this community it is a great place and you are adding to it.

I've had books to learn Japanese gathering dust for almost a decade now, too short of time to get further than page 10 before I give up again. If I find I have more time in the future I'll be back to pick your brains for help. :)

Thanks
Sue

I would love to give it a go

where do I begin

thank you
Hi nava,

You said where do you begin, well firstly what is it that you want to acheive in Japanese, what type of things do you like that is japan related, as this is very important in the learning phases.

but the fastest way that i have found for me and this might not work for everyone is start learning the basic writing system which is Hiragan & Katakana.

Google these or search these how you see fit and i can help you with your study of these .

Many Thanks

Martin

Hi Martin! Sorry I did not see this before, I have been very busy and I'm a bit slow to getting around the site. I LOVE learning other languages. My main focus is to brush up on my Russian and learn Mongolian but I would Love to learn some Japanese Language, also. I really do love learning other languages.....Other languages sould like Beautiful music to me.... Some more particular than others.... Thank you for offering to give us advice on where to start. My language learning is a little on hold right now, because I have so much going on right now... if I do study, then it is with listening devices, at times I can listen and do something else at the same time.

I look forward to hearing from you and very nice to meet you! Thank you for your kindness and helpfulness!

Thank you Anneliese for welcoming me to this site and everyone else on here.

CountryEagle, i suppose it depends what you are wanting to learn first but listening is a very good idea, to start off as you will hear sounds in japanese more and more and they will not sound so foreign/alien the more you hear them.

halkush - Thank you for your kind words, yes immersion is the fastest way to learn a language this is what i did not have as i am living in london, but i built a japanese enviroment around me and that way i was able to learn faster than a uni student studying Japanese, so yes immersion is very helpful.

Many Thanks

Martin

You are welcome Martin!! Glad you are here!!:)

I do speak two languages-German and English!!

The language I would realy like to learn is french!! Always have liked the french language!!

Hi Martin!

Hi Martin! What language learning resources do you use. Which ones do you find to be most helpful. Ever heard of Pimslers Language Learning Resources, The Rosetta Stone Language Learning Resources And Learning A Language in Seven Days used by FBI & CIA...? The first and last ones neamed, are the 2 language learning resources I have used and prefer the most. The Rosetta Stone Language Learning resources are, excellent but too expensive.

I guess in a way, I try the imersions way, too. I do collect books, newspapers, clothers, eating utensiles, etc. from all over the world....to help with learning and being part of other cultures; as well as do what I can, to make friends where ever I go, with people from all over the world. I just Love people and Love hearing and speaking languages from All Over The World!!! Beautiful Music to me!That is so great you are learning Japanese!

Hope you enjoy it here and I wish you well in all your studies!

Hi CountryEagle,

Thank you so much for your questions, regarding the language resources i used to use and i guess still do but it is for fun now since i have become fluent in Japanese, i have heard all about the pimsleur and rosetta stone e.c.t but made a point of not using them as they contain too much english in them and not enough Japanese.

I have never really learnt from a textbook or any language software really, i started out learning all of the most commmon 2000 and odd Kanji then Hiragana & Katakana as i felt that this was the basis and foundation to get me learning real Japanese, then i jumped straight into japanese text magazines, websites and english/japanese dictionaries, there i got words that i learnt and then learned a sentence with that word.

All the time also i was watching japanese shows, drama's, movies, music all without subs as this is extra english i just did not need yes it is tough going but it pays off big time in the coming months, i was able to slowly understand all this eventually, because i was learning words and sentences that are spoken in real life so i was picking up loads of new words and sentences daily.

This is the basic description of my method, with this method i learnt japanese pretty fast, obviously i put in alot of hours but the reward i have now is that i can converse in japanese very comfortably and read write, i love my japanese dramas and music and culture so i can now really appreciate it, it has opened up a new world of new things to explore and there is not a day that goes by where i do not do something in japanese not because i feel i have to, it is because it has just become part of my life.

Sorry for the long post, but if you need any help or if you are stuck what to do next in japanese or where to go in your studies just reply to this and i will help the best i can.

These methods might not work for everyone but i have a friend that im teaching japanese to and he is coming along very well it's been about 13 months and he is very conversational and is pretty good at writing and reading so i think in another 9-10 months he will be pretty fluent.

Again very sorry for the long post but i really like japanese culture.

Take Care and have a lovley evening

Martin

Hi Martin!

Hi Martin! I see how you learn best now. I lean best that way, too, with imersion....but I live so far out in the country, too far from any Japanese restraunts, and have little children who need me, other responsabilities and other situations I am dealing with, That prevent me from the best language learning method of imersion.... That is why I must use the language learning resources, for now, that I mentioned.... [

I have even tried finding various web sites, that are in other countries, to help me with learnin various different languages, but can not seem to figure out how to find them...a small part of imersion. If you have any suggestions, I would be greatful!

AND no, not too long, I do the same thing sometimes. Just be yourself! That is the most important thing, to express yourself Freely! ...but of course, always with peace, love and cosideration....I don't think that is a problem, because you are always very curtious and nice and polite and considerate!!! Thanks for the advice, it is always most welcome. Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am happy that you are able to experience the Japanese Culture in such a beautiful, enriching and personal way! You certainly are Blessed! Take care and keep in touch.

Hi CountryEagle,

It is depending on what language you are trying to find, i will use Japanese as an example, when i was starting out or about 2 months into learning, i searched for japanese news papers, i found a list of these and bookmarked them and saved one as my homepage everytime i loaded up firefox! so the first thing i saw when going on the net was japanese there was no getting away from those Kanji!

here is one i use everyday http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/

also i recommend using google of course, but not .com or uk (google.co.jp) and (yahoo.co.jp) whatever your needing to search do it this way even if it for english as there will always be a few japanese sites that come up on your specific subject.

Im not sure what level your japanese or other language learning is at, as i could explain better i guess if i knew what stage of learning you are at so i could advise what you do next e.c.t.

But i recommend a podcast even if you don't understand them i found these when i was learning japanese just by clicking around the yomiuri.co.jp website that was the newspapers i searched for, and this is when i could not read japanese, news podcasts are good little chunks of about 20 or so minutes of news in japan perfect if you are short of time, if you can pick up 1 word in them 20 mins great if not tomorrow is another day, with that word look it up and learn a sentence with it of course im not sure what level you are at but this was like stage 2 for me.

Anyway there are a few things to get you on your way.

Take Care

Martin

HI Sanderssmc!

Sorry I haven't answered back till now, but been BUSY! I know how to get the Jerusalem Post in Hebrew & English but how do I find other International News Papers in other languages, from other countries? Is there a web site you find your News Papers in Japanese? Also, is there a way to log onto TV stations, via internet, in other countries? There is a TV Station that Halkush gets over in Australia, that is in Chinese, I would Love to listen to. That would be an easy way to help me learn and teach my children another language, at the same time as learning myself!

They are so young and I try to expose them to all cultures, as much as possible. I collect childrens books from all over the world, adapted into English. Except I also have a childrens Story book litterally from Russia, all in Russian. I have books of Children's stories from Africa, China, Russia, India, Thiland, Isreal/Hebrew, Native American stories, etc...and much more. I love reading them to my children and reading them myself, with or without my children.... I am a big child at heart and not ashamed to say it! Any Japanese Childrens stories you could recommend for me to look for, at Barns & Nobel? It would be greatly appreciated! I love finding good books for my children! ESPECIALLY International/multicultural childrens stories!!! All 3 of my children and me, Loves to read....and Loves Music of All Kinds!

Thanks for all your suggestions! It is so greatly appreciated!
