Serena, Thanks for the pictures from the UP of Mich.

I traveld those roads many times back when I taught at LSSU in the Sault. We don't have collor like that here in Alaska. Our fall colors are gold from birch and popple, and green, blie blackl of the spruce.

You're welcome, Hallarian. :) They are lovely, aren't they? Nothing like having all your cares and worries just swallowed up as you drive through tunnels of trees like this. I'm surprised to hear you don't have the color like that in Alaska--never thought about it, I guess. I'll bet it's just as beautiful in its own way, though, in the fall. I know I sure fell in love with Alaska when I was there. :)

`tall ships set sail Monday from Halifax - left a treasure chest of tourism booty

The visit of the nearly 40 tall ships fit nicely with the city's image of itself as a historic naval base. Attractions varied from ships like the Tenacious, a 65-metre barque outfitted to accommodate disabled sailors, to the traditional beer tents set up beside waterfront condos.

"They're clean, they're green, they're tourist friendly and they're big economic generators."

A lineup of hungry visitors wore T-shirts festooned with images of square-rigged vessels. "The last three days have been a record-breaker for us," said Carvalho, as he rang in bills at the counter cash register. "we went through 3,500 paper place mats," as 400,000 people strolled at the waterfront, and brought in $14 million in spending. "restaurants called it the biggest day in history." The event was declared a financial success!

Alaskan winters are glorious too!

Too long and dark for some, not long enough for others. The Northern Lights are almost only seen in winter.

Thanks for that thought, Hallarian.

I know pictures can't even begin to do it justice, but it may be as close as I'll ever get.

Northern Lights in Alaska, the Aurora Borealis.

This was written by an elementary schoolchild in Seward (where I visited).

Aurora Borealis

Glowing brightly in the moonlit sky, I see.
The heavenly light floating,
A beautiful swirl of rainbow colors,
They gently dance with the shimmering stars,
Swimming in a dark, black ocean.
Pure silence, I hear.
Every creature is oh, so mesmerized by the beauty of the beaming hues.
I smell the fresh, clean air of the night.
I feel the cold, crisp snow under my feet,
And wonder how there could even be such a stunning display.
The Aurora Borealis begins to fade,
I watch watch as the illuminating light melts into the night.
I whisper goodbye and pray that they will once again come out and create
yet another magical night.
