If the budgets stay at $15/$20 million, what chance is there of a decent project - perhaps we should all chip in to get him a decent budget - remember the dollar doesn't buy much outside the states at the moment, which makes it even worse!

Well, I just shelled out $25 + S/H for Out of Reach, and now I'm skint. Oh, wait - I have some laundry money (who needs clean clothes?) and a jar full of pennies! :D If it'll help...

-TD, being facetious, eh

...Is the low budget the problem, though? I wonder. I suppose a good script would get studio interest, but then they'd want the part to go to someone younger, with more box office appeal. I keep thinking, as I watch the trailers for The Bourne Supremacy, that there is a film Steven could have done quite handily. But then, Matt Damon doesn't do a thing for me.

I don't see any reason why a low-budget film necessarily has to be a bad film, I really don't. No spectacular CGI effects, no wires, no high speed car chases and crashes that out-crash everything that's ever gone before. Just a good story, simply told (and no stunt-dubbing, please!), with attention paid to detail and a well-written script. And a director who knows what he's doing, who knows how to tell a story... ah. Therein lies the problem, I guess.

yudansha

TheGreatOne
Just a story simply told?

That sounds like taking a mediocre book and have someone read it to you.
You NEED those big explosions, you NEED those high speed car chases, you NEED the fancy choreography with alot of originality, and all of that NEEDS to flow together well in a good story. All that NEEDS to be in an action movie if it is intended to succeed. Otherwise you'd be sitting there looking at a fiction story told in a biographical/documentary style way - that's not action. For good action, you need stunts that require equipment which costs money. Camera work needs to be done well as well for good action, and that costs even more money (where typical video cameras run at $50k each ... and to get good action out of one scene, you would require 5 to 10 of such cameras). Making good action asks for very good financial support ... otherwise, that action won't end up a big box office hit.

Steven's early films were all low budget, yet they had all the chases, explosions and fight scenes you could hope for, not to mention a decent supporting cast. If the entire film were one long chase/fight/explosion scene, I could see having half a dozen cameras or more throughout the film; but most movies, even action movies, don't require them every second of the film.

I could see Steven in a suspense film with occasional action, if he wants to take the path away from all action all the time type of films. And for that you don't need a huge budget - just a good script, a good director, and half-decent actors in the supporting roles. And when I talk about "simply told" I'm not talking about simple stories - I'm talking about stories told without a lot of unnecessary fripperies, like those horrendously awful CGI shots in OFAK - that money would have been better spent on paying someone to rewrite the script, for example. Or hiring someone to kidnap the director, or something.

yudansha

TheGreatOne
I'm not totally against CGI, but I'm in no way all for it.

I see what you're saying, TD.
I'd like to see a modern version of "Above The Law" or "Hard To Kill" from Seagal ... or even "Marked For Death" as the Jamaicans are getting more screen time these days in the movies (that scene in Bad Boys II reminded me a little of MFD)

tora

Funmaker
Who's against CGI?Please have some respect for Einstein :D
If they could draw a tigger jumping on its tail then perhaps they could perform the trick themselves and you know what...I won't be surprised Seagal will be the one to pioneer it :D
