Actor Anthony Anderson, colleague charged with rape while making movie

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Anthony Anderson, the rotund comedic co-star of "Kangaroo Jack" and the original "Barbershop," has been arrested and charged with aggravated rape while shooting a movie.

The 33-year-old actor was accused by an unidentified woman of luring her into a trailer on the set of his latest movie, "Hustle & Flow," and sexually assaulting her with the film's assistant director, Wayne Witherspoon.

Both men were charged on Wednesday after being taken into custody by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at the Shelby County Correctional Center, a penal farm on the outskirts of Memphis, where filming was under way for the movie.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Shular said a passer-by heard screams coming from the trailer and opened the door.

"And she ran out nude," Shular said.

Both suspects were released Wednesday evening after posting $20,000 bond each.

Anderson's spokesman, Allan Mayer, who specializes in celebrity crisis cases, told The Associated Press his client "absolutely denies the heinous charges."

"Anthony is a happily married family man who has never been accused of -- no less involved in -- anything remotely like this, and we are confident that when all the facts come out, he will be completely exonerated," Mayer said.

Mayer said it's unclear whether Anderson will return to work on the movie, but said he will likely remain in the Memphis area for the time being.

A representative for Witherspoon, 42, could not immediately be located.

Anderson, who's married with two children, was raised in Compton, Calif., and has appeared in an array of comedies, including playing one of Jim Carrey's illegitimate genius sons in 2000's "Me, Myself & Irene."

The roly-poly actor specializes is physical comedy -- often at his own expense. He has been brutalized by Jet Li in "Romeo Must Die," pummeled by Steven Seagal in "Exit Wounds," crushed by a cash machine in "Barbershop" and menaced by a rogue marsupial in "Kangaroo Jack." He also starred in the WB's short-lived sitcom "All About the Andersons" last year, which was a fictionalized version of his real life.

Seagal really knows how to pick his co-stars.. eh?

First DMX
Then JA-Rule
Now Anthony Andersen?!!?!?

That's a shame, I really liked that guy. I just don't get why Hollywood celebs always get into trouble. They have so much money and fame, why do they need to steal cars and rape women?

I really liked him too, Reservoir Dog. Of course, he's presumed innocent until proven otherwise, but the fact that a passerby heard screams and she ran out nude screaming doesn't look particularly good for him. And also the fact that he's being charged with "aggravated rape" means intercourse actually occurred, was not just attempted.

I wonder why myself. Is it an ego thing? Thinking they're above the law (no pun intended) now that they have a little celebrity status? Something like this, if proven to be true, affects so many lives--and not just the victim's. And for what?

He doesn't seem like the type, but you never know...
Sometimes celeb status goes to their heads...
Lots of women make up these things to extort celebs too, I think that is just horrible...
Res, I don't think you should take shots at Seagal for picking him as a co-star, he can't control everyone's actions, he's just trying to help these guys, and plus, people do change...
Too bad if he did do it, that's sad...

Lotus--In no way, shape or form do I see that comment from Reservoir Dog as "taking a shot" at Steven. It was merely a joke. Quite obviously Steven would have no way of knowing how his co-stars would turn out in the future.

Lighten up a bit, eh, Lotus? :) Take it from a friend, Lotus. No way would Steven want a woman jumping to his rescue over any little misconstrued comment.

Now, having said that, Reservoir Dog, feel free to pick on me for saying something. :D

Well, it doesn't really matter if he would mind anyhow, but I still would do it gladly...
Just as I would want him to do it for me...Besides, who knows what he likes or wants...:)

No Serena, you said it best. Of course Seagal has nothing to do with their actions. It was a joke. But I don't think you should make them out to be Seagal's flunkies, they helped make "Exit Wounds" out to be succesful by bringing in a different audience.

:) Thanks--but you don't think I ever said anything about them being flunkies, do you? I agree 100% that the movie wouldn't be nearly as entertaining without Anderson or the other co-stars. I liked Ja Rule and DMX quite a bit in those movies, actually, regardless of how they are in their personal lives.

I know you never said anything about them being flunkies. I was talking to Lotussan.

"Exit Wounds" wouldnt have been the great movie it was without the comedy team of Arnold and Anderson.

Oh well....

This has become "Our Daily Bread" among celebrities.

All I have to say is: Women, don't go into a private setting with men you don't know. Men (with money), don't close the door of the room/trailer with out getting her signature saying that she agrees to do....whatever.

Keep it simple...

Good points Jalu...
But I think if people got to know eachother, they wouldn't have a problem...
Places like trailers and hotel rooms are just not the time or place for anything but something that might not be so worthy...
If a girl does go there with a man she doesn't know well, she's just asking for trouble...
Just because a man has money doesn't make him trustworthy, and just because he has money, doesn't mean someone has to be trying to use him for it...
If a girl goes to a strange mans room, he is going to think she's desperate and probably treat her as such, it happens all the time...

I just hope none of you ever has the life-altering misfortune of thinking you can trust a man and have him prove you wrong. I'm the first one to say people need to take responsibility for their own actions, but there is still NEVER an excuse for rape, no matter what the circumstances.

Serena....I am not excusing anything. My mother always said to my brothers that they had to respect all women... even whores. What I am saying is that women shouldn't put themselves in a vulnerable position, not that if they are in one men have a license to do whatever. Just to use common sense...

Lotussan

Totally true, Serena...
But I am just saying that one shouldn't put themselves in such a potentially bad position...
I think these girls that would do such a thing as going to a strange man's room are acting inappropriately and even leading him on in a way...
I agree that some men automatically think lots of things a woman does are flirtations when it often they aren't intending them to be, such as interacting on a forum like this, for example...
Just because one replies to a post someone of the opposite sex makes, does not mean one is flirting...
But you are so right, there is no excuse for force, no means no...

I couldn't agree with you more, Jalu--and you also, Lotus. These are the exact same things I've tried to explain to the young women and young men at the shelters where I've volunteered. Unfortunately, many of them had already found out the hard way. You can't teach common sense, but all I can do is hope my words have made some difference to at least some of them, females and males alike.

Storm

Smile dammit!
Whatever reason this girl went into the trailer they had no right to assault her. If guilty they want locking up. Just because a girl says "yes i'll go in your trailer" does not mean a guy can do what he wants.

And all this happened on the Shelby County Penal Farm?
Sheesh....you gotta be kidding me? I live an hour away
from that place. That's too bad, I really like that guy......:(

Exactly, Storm. I mean, I know people should use common sense. But we don't know any of the circumstances yet. Maybe she had lunch with these guys every day. Or maybe they told her they had something she needed to check. My whole point is, she worked with these guys. Why wouldn't she trust them? We just don't know all the facts yet, from either side, and shouldn't automatically assume guilt of either person until we know more.
