When Would You Tell a Lie?

Hi all....Funny thing happened to me last night, so I thought I'd share, as this had me deep in contemplation....

I was talking to a friend online, and I accidently typed---"As a rule I DO lie."

Hahaha...

Well, of course, what I meant to type was---"As a rule, I do NOT lie."

And that's true, 99 percent of the time, I strive to tell the truth...

I try to follow the buddhist precepts, and I have always been a very moral person, and I always try to do the right thing...

I also learned a long time ago, that lies only serve to dig a big hole for oneself...

I believe it's better to be honest with yourself and others in the long run....

However, there are certain times when I would lie...

For example, to protect a family member (Mother, Father, sister, or brother if I had them...)

Also, I would lie to protect someone I loved (Husband, or significant other, or best friend...)

Now some of you may think that is a really bad thing, so I wanted to know....

Would you lie in such a case?

Do you ever lie?

Like I told my friend, I would lie to protect someone I loved, I think that is a normal reaction, does this make me a bad person?

Just something to contemplate, so if you feel like replying please do...

And please, lets be honest in our answers!

There's something called a 'white lie' and then there's national security.

Yes Lotussan, lies are inevitable for security reasons. Safety is the most important ... all emotions aside ... survival is the key.

Well lets see if I can CAREFULLY respond.....

I guess you can say a lie is used when it's desperatly important to save someone from being hurt.
But do not lie to hurt someone.

I decided around age 14 that I would not tell lies, to my parents or to anyone. I've tried to stick by that, as hard as it gets sometimes. I've had a few occasions where I was forced to keep silent, but to me, that's still lying - lying by omission - and it does eat away at my conscience, tears away at the edges of my honesty and integrity.

I got into trouble a lot when I was a kid because I always told the truth. A strange reward, but I figured it was safer to tell the truth than to lie.

And I would not lie to protect a family member, friend or loved one. The way I see it, telling lies to protect someone usually results in everyone involved being hurt. Stepping up and doing the right thing, however painful, is far better than lying and getting other people involved in the lie.

At least with me, people know where they stand. I have nothing but my word and my word is my honour.

If you keep quiet it doesn't sound like lies at all...Or I should say it has no sound at all?:D
To keep quiet means it's not the right time yet.

To lie or not to lie.........
I allways say, it is much more easyer to remeber the truth then the lies.
The truth never change its so easy to keep, but the lies.........mostly you forget very fast wich tale you wher use (same moments, Days etc) bevor.
