My name is Alita and I'm from Uruguay. Uruguay is a samll country in South America next to Argentina and Brazil. There are beautiful beaches and palces here and this is a country with a socialist president elected by the people.
I love Steven Seagal films...but this time I'm realy disappointed with his new film.
If you saw this film you'll think that it was done in Uruguay , but it is not true..it was filmed in Bulgaria ... a country that have no matches with uruguay. Also all that is shown in the film have nothing to see with the way of living in uruguay, with his people, history and present of the country.-
I would like to invite Mr. Seagal, to the director and the writer of the movie to come to uruguay and to see what a mistake thay made.-

"If you saw this film you'll think that it was done in Uruguay..."

Why would I think that? When I saw it, I thought it was filmed in Bulgaria (due to the language, signs, and character names used in the production - not to mention the crew).

Welcome. :D

I don´t want to offend you, but all the american people that i Knew(and aren´t a lot of them) are really ignorant ´bout almost everybody, living in a bubble believing all the lies that said to him, making wars and a worst world, thinking only ´boy¡ut the profits.

It happens any similar in ¨Out of Reach¨, showing the Turkish peolple as criminals. The typical USA ignorance.Forget it a and enjoy with Vinnie Jines and Steven,is the best you can do.If you think, you will hate America. The need an ATLAS URGENTLY.
The next villains will be the scotland, the rumanian....****ing ignorant scripters

Hi Alita,

Welcome to the Steven Seagal Unofficial Site. I am sharing your feelings because we lived same things in Out Of Reach.. Like Latinojazz said Out of Reach showing the Turkish people as criminals... But we are not..
May be in future he will learn to respect other countries ..

What?

LOL you guys are taking these things all out of proportion! For all Seagal cared, it could've been any country. Turkey just happened to be more convenient for one reason or another (e.g. pricing for location, equipment availability, appropriate scenery for the story, etc...). And there are plenty of movies showing American criminals IN America. So just because a movie was filmed in Turkey does NOT mean Steven Seagal has some sort of a hatred for the country and those who inhabit it.

Movies shows american criminals in america because there are a lot of criminals in UNITED STATES. And in movies the USA is shown like it really is. It's not invented at it is in Submerged and Out Of Reach.

But if someone makes a movie which takes place in (for e.g.) Uruguay, the movie should be realist, otherwise they should invent a country (like in other GOOD movies).

I think this movie shows a lack of respect towards other nations and cultures. And like in every other hollywood movie you are the one which saves our lifes
:gun: :gun:

I hope this changes in the future.

Steven Seagal and “Submerged” irritate Uruguay

Uruguay is seriously considering legal actions against the producers of a Hollywood film “Submerged” with Steven Seagal which ridicules the South American country as a banana republic where a terrorist captured US nuclear submarine is taken.

Martin Papich head of the Uruguayan Audiovisual Institute revealed that the Ministry of Education and Culture is considering legal actions, both short and long term, to protest the Hollywood attitude towards the country’s reputation, history and national symbols.
In the film Uruguay is shown as a country ruled by a corrupt president surrounded and supported by drug barons where a woman United States Ambassador is mercilessly killed in Montevideo.

In the countryside instead of cattle and sheep managed by tough gauchos, roam goats looked after by blonde peasants and in Montevideo streets signals and telephone booths have French writings while pedestrians speaking in English or Italian.

“Submerged” was filmed in Bulgaria.

“It’s the promotion of a cultural style, typical Hollywood. This time it was Uruguay’s turn to be chosen as an exotic banana country, and the film is definitively bad”, added Mr. Papich who nevertheless pointed out that the ridiculing of Uruguayan national symbols is a completely different issue.

“It’s our duty not only to defend the international image of Uruguay but also our national symbols, and here is where we will be acting”, said Mr. Papich.

However international critics seem to agree with the poor quality of the film. “There was a time when Steven Seagal was bad in a campy sort of way. Now he's just bad, and whoever convinced him to make "Submerged" should be severely chastised and held up to public ridicule. Like the film "Submerged" is so awful it's hard to know where to begin. You get the feeling that someone got the bright idea, Hey, let's set it in Uruguay, because not a whole lot of action-film lovers know a whole lot about that tiny South American country, and so they'll be more apt to believe this far-fetched plot involving mind control and a modern version of a Nazi mad doctor gleefully performing "research" operations.

“Oh, and submarines are cool! Let's get them on a submarine! That's about all you can glean from this muddled mess, which substitutes pointless action at every turn for anything resembling a well-reasoned plot. There's plenty of shooting and stabbing, but it's all so strobe-like that even the action can get pretty darned annoying—especially since we're not really sure what's going on.

“Like Sean Connery character in "The Rock," Chris Cody (Seagal) is sprung from the brig on the USS Clinton (okay all you people reading politics into "Star Wars 3," here's another chance to speculate) and promised a pardon if he'll go to Uruguay, where an American ambassador has been assassinated—by a U.S. insider. It's up to Commander Cody and his dirty baker's half-dozen to get to the bottom of things

“Even if you've been paying close attention, rather than squirming in your seat, using the bathroom, or fixing another snack, you still won't figure out exactly how the action shifted so quickly from a military-industrial complex to a submarine that terrorists have commandeered. All you can tell is that Cody and his bunch are shooting and stabbing everybody else on the screen.

“Now, if the special effects or stunt work was spectacular, then "Submerged" might merit a star or two. But the sad fact is that nothing is believable—not even the way the fake blood is applied. And the submarine? The top of it looks like a patchwork quilt.

“B-movie director Anthony Hickox ("Jill the Ripper") relies heavily on techniques that resemble skip-printing and stop-action photography during the action scenes, which, you can only guess, is intended to compensate for the lack of real special effects and believable fight sequences. Through it all, Seagal, the man of a single face, looks and acts as if he's on a subway commute. Even when the sub is blown up, his only reaction is, "Oh, man."

I think latinojazz is blaming the scriptwriters, and in that regard, so do I. It's very easy to create a generic villain, and then look around and point at some country whose people haven't been used as villains yet. A good writer does research, which is hard work; a bad or mediocre writer is simply too lazy to do the work.

Unfortunately, most of these scriptwriters are in fact American, which does cast a bit of a stain on Americans as a whole. There are just as many home-grown bad guys as there are bad guys in other countries, but the current trend seems to be "let's make the villain anyone but American, and it'll sell better." Well, it might sell better in the North American market, but as you can see, it's starting to annoy those outside of the North American market, and it's those folks that support the high rate of return for these awful dtv efforts.

I'm trying to figure out how they would make a Canadian a bad guy. I guess the worst we can do is be ruthlessly polite in our evil deeds and then apologise to the good guy as we try to knock him down with our hockey stick.

This was not talking about script writer's it was American People as a whole are really ignorant 'bout almost everybody living in a bubble!
My bubble was popped a long time ago!!
But each is entitled to there own opinion, I for one would just never make a comment about a specific country! As I said before there are alot of great people here from alot of great country's! Who I have enjoyed meeting and becoming great friends with!

I don't really want to put myself in the middle of this argument. I think people are making a big deal out of this. Ever read a Tom Clancy Novel? Who are the villains? They are either Russian, Chinese, or Iraqi. America is tired of seeing these villainous superpowers of the past so they try to spontaneously target other places. I do not think the Script hints at anything. Writer probably didn't even look up where this country is. Just the spelling of the name in the Dictionary. And I am not sure about America being made up of complete buffoons. Is this why it's the number one Country in the world? Its even funny a Film like this could create such a sensational headline instead of collecting dust on the DVD shelve.

Anyways Here Are Related Reviews:

Completely wrong about Uruguay

What is showed on this film is very sad.
First of all Uruguay is in South-America, second we don 't have Guerrillas.....
Our democratic system has been highly praised by europeans.. Our education is one of the bests of the Americas, and there 's no country other than Uruguay and Argentina, with more general knowledge in all the Americas.
We don 't drop bombs and are a very peaceful country.
This movie shows the world a bad and unreal image of our country.
First of all, Steven Seagal should have gotten real information, before doing this fiasco.

This must be awesome

As an uruguayan, and reading the reviews... I will run right now to the store to rent this (I guess) masterpiece! We apparently have a dictator, submarines, goats insteads of cows, tropical climate (bananas included) and a lot of other stuff that boy! I want to have. I will do a movie located in NY with only two floor buildings, mud streets and hindu buses. Yo! citizens of the United States (not americans as you like to said)... (...) . Just to know a little more of my beloved country.

Does anyone know where Uruguay is?

This comment was originally posted by ANA on IMDB.
This picture is based in a country with bananas, terrorists, tyrant government, Heidi's girls raising goats...COME ON!!! URUGUAY IS IN SOUTH America, and we raise COWS no goats!!! This is one of the most peaceful countries in America, that's one of the most particular characteristics of our country. We have nothing in common with BULGARIA (where it was filmed), we don't have Maya's ruins (that is in north America, please!!!), and we can't hide a submarine!! If you want to create a new country, be my guest! But you are showing this movie all over the world with bad concepts and a very poor history. Please...search a little more before you film a movie!!!
